13.01.1961 wyselecjonowano w ramach prywatnego programu 13 kobiet, które zaliczyły testy przygotowujące do lotu kosmicznego.
Wybór nie został zaakceptowany przez NASA.
Nigdy te kobiety nie spotkały się razem jako grupa.
Projekt był znany jako FLAT (First Lady Astronaut Trainees).
W 1995 hollywoodzki producent James Cross wymyślił dla tej grupy kobiet nazwę Mercury 13.
