Po 15 latach satelita pogodowy Metop-A kończy aktywność operacyjną.
W najbliższych dniach jego orbita zostanie obniżona, a jego spłonięcie w atmosferze Ziemi ma nastąpić do 25 lat.Metop-A has been providing meteorological data to global users for fifteen years, three times longer than expected.Published on 15 November 2021
The process of removing the satellite from its orbit, known as deorbiting, begins with a series of manoeuvres that will be conducted over the next ten days. The satellite will be lowered so that its point of orbit closest to the Earth is decreased from 817km to 580km.

(...) To fulfil its ambitious mission, MetOp-A incorporates a comprehensive remote-sensing payload consisting of a set of new-generation European instruments, plus a set of ‘heritage’ instruments provided by the United States similar to those flown on current NOAA satellites.
Supplied by the French space agency CNES, the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) will take measurements in more than 8000 channels to provide temperature and water vapour profiles with unprecedented accuracy to feed numerical weather-prediction models. Its soundings will be complemented by measurements from the US heritage instruments and the Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS), a five-channel radiometer developed for EUMETSAT but also planned to fly on future NOAA satellites. WASHINGTON — Europe’s 30-nation Eumetsat meteorological satellite organization will adjust the orbit of its Metop-A weather satellite to squeeze at least a few additional years of service out of the 10-year-old spacecraft. (...)
