Telstar 1 osiągnął orbitę o parametrach: hp=945 km, ha=5643 km, i=44,80°, t=157,80 min.

In 1967, as NASA continued preparations for the first human landing on the Moon, the agency once again turned its attention toward exploring Venus. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, modified the backup Mariner 4 spacecraft to operate closer to the Sun, and on June 14, 1967, NASA launched Mariner 5 on a 127-day journey to the mysterious cloud-shrouded planet.

Space Shuttle Flight 5 (STS-5) Post Flight Presentation

40 Years Ago: STS-5, Columbia’s First Satellite Deploy Mission
Nov 10, 2022

On its fifth trip into space in November 1982, space shuttle Columbia’s STS-5 mission set a number of firsts. NASA managers considered this the first operational flight of the space shuttle, following completion of the four Orbital Flight Tests. For the first time, four astronauts rode into space in the same spacecraft, Commander Vance D. Brand, Pilot Robert F. Overmyer, and William B. Lenoir and Joseph P. Allen, the first two mission specialists to fly. The mission deployed the first two satellites for commercial customers. The mission’s plan also included the first spacewalk of the space shuttle program, but independent hardware failures in both spacesuits prevented the spacewalk from taking place. The mission also included three student experiments.

Statystyki obchodów Bożego Narodzenia i Nowego Roku w kosmosie (1)

Władimira Titowa  i  Musy  Manarowa.

Skylab 1 raz  - 1974
Salut-6 1 raz - 1978
Mir  12 razy  -  1988 – 1999
ISS do tej pory 23 razy – od 2001
CSS 2 razy - od 2022

Oprócz Rosjan Nowy Rok w kosmosie rozpoczynali na Mirze:

1995 Thomas Reiter ( Niemiec)
1997 John Blaha (USA)
1998 Dave Wolf  (USA)

Jedynie Boże Narodzenie na orbicie spędzili cudzoziemcy:

1999 Jean-François Clervoy (Francja)
1999 Claude Nicollier (Szwajcaria)

(...) With the two spacecraft now high above the Gulf of Mexico, near the western tip of Cuba, Wakata grappled the SFU at 5:57 a.m. EST, about 91 minutes later than planned. He then lowered it gently into the payload bay, locking it into place at 6:39 a.m. EST by closing four retention latches. The internal batteries were bypassed and a remotely-operated electrical cable was connected to the side of the satellite. (...)

Space Shuttle Flight 53 (STS-54) Post Flight Presentation

Vanilla to Chocolate: Remembering STS-54, Thirty Years On
by Ben Evans January 13, 2023

(...) In addition to the 45-foot-long (13.7-meter) TDRS-F/IUS stack—which totaled 38,256 pounds (17,353 kilograms) and filled more than two-thirds of the payload bay—Endeavour also carried the twin detectors of the Diffuse X-ray Spectrometer (DXS). This sophisticated astrophysics instrument was mounted onto a pair of Hitchhiker panels on opposing walls of the shuttle’s payload bay.

DXS originally formed part of a larger payload called the Shuttle High Energy Astrophysics Laboratory (SHEAL), which would have flown alongside the Broad Band X-ray Telescope (BBXRT). However, the latter instrument was completed ahead of schedule and was moved forward on the shuttle flight manifest and added to the STS-35 mission, which flew in December 1990. As a result, DXS was juggled between a couple of other flights, before eventually settling as a secondary payload on STS-54. (...)

45 Years Ago: Progress 1 Begins the Era of Space Station Resupply
Jan 20, 2023

Long-duration orbital platforms like the International Space Stations rely on regular resupply from the ground to maintain a continuous human presence in space. Today, a fleet of vehicles keeps the space station and its crews safe and able to conduct world-class research. The first resupply spacecraft, Progress 1, lifted off on Jan. 20, 1978, to maintain the Soviet Union’s Salyut 6 space station and its two-person resident crew. Progress 1 not only brought consumables and experiment hardware for the cosmonauts but also refueled the station, replenished its atmosphere, boosted its orbit, and removed unwanted trash by burning it up on reentry. Updated versions of Progress cargo vehicles continue to be a mainstay in the fleet of spacecraft that regularly resupply the International Space Station.

55 lat temu, 22 stycznia 1968 roku, został wyniesiony w kosmos pierwszy egzemplarz LEM-a w misji Apollo 5.

1968: Apollo 5 (NASA)

Cytuj
1968 January 22 - . 22:48 GMT - . Launch Site: Cape Canaveral. Launch Complex: Cape Canaveral LC37B. LV Family: Saturn I. Launch Vehicle: Saturn IB.
Apollo 5 - . Payload: Apollo LM-1. Mass: 14,360 kg (31,650 lb). Nation: USA. Agency: NASA Houston. Program: Apollo. Class: Moon. Type: Manned lunar lander. Spacecraft: Apollo LM. Decay Date: 1968-02-12 . USAF Sat Cat: 3107 . COSPAR: 1968-007B. Apogee: 374 km (232 mi). Perigee: 169 km (105 mi). Inclination: 31.60 deg. Period: 89.90 min.

NASA launched Apollo 5 - the first, unmanned LM flight - on a Saturn IB from KSC Launch Complex 37B at 5:48:08 p.m. EST. Mission objectives included verifying operation of the LM structure itself and its two primary propulsion systems, to evaluate LM staging, and to evaluate orbital performances of the S-IVB stage and instrument unit. Flight of the AS-204 launch vehicle went as planned, with nosecone (replacing the CSM) jettisoned and LM separating. Flight of LM-1 also went as planned up to the first descent propulsion engine firing. Because velocity increase did not build up as quickly as predicted, the LM guidance system shut the engine down after only four seconds of operation, boosting the LM only to a 171 x 222 km orbit. Mission control personnel in Houston and supporting groups quickly analyzed the problem. They determined that the difficulty was one of guidance software only (and not a fault in hardware design) and pursued an alternate mission plan that ensured meeting the minimum requirements necessary to achieve the primary objectives of the mission. The ascent stage separated and boosted itself into a 172 x 961 km orbit. After mission completion at 2:45 a.m. EST January 23, LM stages were left in orbit to reenter the atmosphere later and disintegrate. Apollo program directors attributed success of the mission to careful preplanning of alternate ways to accomplish flight objectives in the face of unforeseen events.

Fire in the Hole: Remembering Apollo 5, OTD in 1968
by Ben Evans 2 years ago

(...) Many of us can point to our “favorite” rockets, but in the annals of the “unusual”, the Saturn IB which lofted Apollo 5 on 22 January 1968 must rank highly. It was the eighth and final launch of a Saturn-class booster to originate from Launch Complex (LC)-37 at what is now Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Fla., but its appearance was quite distinct. Unlike later Saturn IB missions—which incorporated an S-IB first stage and S-IVB second stage, topped-off by the Apollo CSM—Apollo 5 carried only the 37,000-pound (16,800 kg) LM, covered by the protective panels of the 28-foot-tall (8.5-meter) Spacecraft/Lunar Module Adapter (SLA) and capped by a bullet-like payload shroud.
