Kulin declined to comment Monday. Brandi Dean, a Houston center spokeswoman, said the space agency will not be replacing Kulin, leaving just 11 members -- six men and five women -- in the 2017 class. His resignation is effective Aug. 31, she added, making Kulin the first astronaut candidate since 1968 to resign before qualifying for spaceflight.
That year, two astronauts from the 1967 class resigned: Brian O'Leary and John Llewellyn. O'Leary resigned in April 1968 due to the lack of spaceflight prospects and Llewellyn resigned a few months later, in August 1968, after failing to make progress piloting jets. Both O'Leary and Llewellyn have died, in 2011 and 2013, respectively. (...)

Summary:Robb Kulin has been selected by NASA to join the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class. He reported for duty in August 2017. Kulin retired from NASA in August 2018. The Alaska native earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Denver before going on to complete a Master’s degree in Materials Science and a Doctorate in Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. He has previous experience as an ice driller in Antarctica on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and Taylor Glaciers, and as a commercial fisherman in Chignik, Alaska. He is a private pilot and also enjoys playing piano, photography, packrafting, running, cycling, backcountry skiing and SCUBA diving.
Personal Data:Kulin was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. His parents, Stephen and Karen Kulin, still live there. He has two older sisters, Kristi and Tara.
Education:Graduated from Robert Service High School in Anchorage, Alaska. Earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Denver. Earned a Master’s degree in Materials Science from the University of California, San Diego. Earned a Doctorate in Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, studying dynamic bone fracture.
Experience:At the time of his selection in June 2017, Kulin was senior manager for flight reliability at SpaceX, leading the Launch Chief Engineering group in Hawthorne, California, where he had worked since 2011. He has previous experience as an ice driller in Antarctica on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and Taylor Glaciers, and as a commercial fisherman in Chignik, Alaska.
NASA Experience:Kulin reported for duty in August 2017 to begin two years of training as an Astronaut Candidate. He resigned from NASA in August 2018.
