Czy ESA nałożyła jakieś embargo na informacje o TGO? 19 września miał być wykonany kolejny manewr korekty orbity heliocentrycznej, a nigdzie nie widzę informacji na ten temat. A już za trzy tygodnie odłączenie EDM od TGO, a jeszcze trzy dni później satelizacja TGO i lądowanie EDM.

Na You-Tubowej stronie ESA pojawiła się dzisiaj animacja jak (powinno) wyglądać lądowanie Schiaparelliego na Marsie.

Lądowanie ma nastąpić przed globalną burzą piaskową.

"Mars will reach the midpoint of its current dust storm season on October 29th of this year. Based on the historical pattern we found, we believe it is very likely that a global dust storm will begin within a few weeks or months of this date," James Shirley, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. The Red Planet has been observed shrouded by planet-encircling dust nine times since 1924, with the five most recent planetary storms detected in 1977, 1982, 1994, 2001 and 2007. The actual number of such events is no doubt higher. In some of the years when no orbiter was observing Mars up close, Mars was poorly positioned for Earth-based telescopic detection of dust storms during the Martian season when global storms are most likely.

Mam pytanko. Czy są plany śledzenia Schiaparelliego przez łazik Opportunity oraz Mars Reconaissance Orbiter? Czy inne orbitery będą brały udział w obserwacji lądowania?

Łazik Opportunity to nie wiem, ale MRO będzie brał udział jako transmitter dla danych z EDM. Mogę sobie też wyobrazić, że MRO będzie probował zrobić zdjęcia lądownika już na miejscu.

MRO będzie transmiterem danych podczas samego lądowania czy też podczas pracy lądownika na powierzchni? Mam nadzieję, że niezależnie od wyników lądowania będziemy mieli fotki MRO lądowiska Schiaparelliego po 19 października

Za transmisję danych podczas lądowania ma odpowiadać Mars Express.

This animation shows the view of the arrival of ESA's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) and the Schiaparelli Entry, descent and landing Demonstrator Module as seen from ESA's Mars Express on 19 October 2016.

More specifically, it shows the field of view as 'seen' by the Melacom radio receiver on Mars Express, which will be receiving signals from Schiaparelli beginning at 13:22 GMT (15:22 CEST) and ending at 15:08 GMT (17:08 CEST). The record of these signals from Schiaparelli will provide a critical indication of the module's descent progress, trajectory and landing.At the start of the animation, TGO and Schiaparelli are shown already separated, which is set to occur at 14:42 GMT (16:42 CEST) on 16 October.

The animation covers the time period between approximately 13:35 GMT (15:35 CEST) and 15:27 GMT (17:27 CEST) on 19 October, including the expected time of Schiaparelli touch down at 14:47 GMT (16:47 CEST).

At the end of the animation, Melacom has stopped recording signals from Schiaparelli and the view rotates as Mars Express slews into an Earth-pointing orientation to transmit the recorded signals to mission controllers at ESA's ESOC operations centre in Darmstadt, Germany.

Czas pracy na Marsie planowany na przynajmniej 2 dni, w tym czasie lądownik będzie się komunikował także z satelitami NASA:

Once safely on the surface, the timeline will operate the science instruments for a planned two days – and possibly longer.

The science activities are designed to make the most of the limited energy available from the batteries, so they will be performed in set windows rather than continuously – typically, for six hours each day.

The timeline will also switch on the module's transmitter during a series of fixed slots to send recorded data up to ESA and NASA orbiters passing overhead, which will then transmit the data to Earth.

These relay slots include 32 by NASA craft: 18 by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, eight by Odyssey and six by Maven. ESA's Mars Express will make 14 overflights.

Opportunity podejmie próbę uchwycenia lądowania Schiaparelliego, jednak szanse na to nie są zbyt duże, ponieważ łazik aktualnie znajduje się przy krawędzi krateru Endeavour i jeśli EDM wyląduje w środku elipsy nie będzie miał możliwości jego sfotografowania (najlepiej gdyby lądownik zniosło dalej na wschód). But the Opportunity rover is in a hole. The Schiaparelli entry is not viewable, Lemmon said. If the European probe lands in the middle of the landing ellipse, or comes in short, nothing will be viewable. If the probe goes long, to the east, it might come over the crater rim from the rover’s point of view, and also be closer to the rover.

“We are watching the horizon,” Lemmon said. “Previously, we figured about one chance in seven of having the parachute go through the frame. We’d likely point to maximize the chance of seeing anything, but there may be arguments for one part of the descent over another.”
