Exploration Mission 1 / Artemis 1
« dnia: Listopad 19, 2018, 08:41 »

The European Service Module is responsible for the Orion capsule's power, air and water — and now that the first such module has arrived at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, engineers can begin connecting the assembly that will fly around the moon in 2020.

https://www.space.com/42458-nasa-orion-capsule-first-european-power-module.html

W najbliższych latach statek czeka integracja kapsuły Orion oraz modułu serwisowego:

The first connection will unite the service module and the crew module adapter, which requires precisely aligning the units and installing 192 bolts. "Alignment is a critical part of the process, it's taking a bit of time," Amy Marasia, who is overseeing the crew module assembly for the upcoming flight, said during the conference. "We're bringing together two elements that were built on different sides of the ocean so that's kind of to be expected."

Next, the pair will be moved to a clean room for welding — and then to a special chamber that can be filled with helium so the team can check for leaks in those welds. The team will then install systems, like the star tracker that helps astronauts calculate their location, and make electrical connections throughout the unit.

All that before they even flip the power switch, which is currently scheduled for January 2019. With the joint complete, NASA personnel will conduct thorough environmental tests on the joined modules in February and March.

Assuming all goes well, the crew capsule itself will be connected in May, at which point the entire assembly will travel to Ohio for more than two months of additional testing. When that process is complete, the package will be shipped back to Florida for its 2020 flight.

Główny człon rakiety SLS wkrótce przejdzie testy napręzeń i obciążeń jakie mają mu towarzyszyć podczas prawdziwego startu:

Technicians at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, moved the largest piece of structural test hardware for America's new deep space rocket, the Space Launch System, from the factory to the dock where it was loaded onto NASA's barge Pegasus Dec. 14, 2018.

The liquid hydrogen tank test article will make its way up the river to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where dozens of hydraulic cylinders in Test Stand 4693 will push and pull on the giant tank, subjecting it to the same stresses and loads it will endure during liftoff and flight.

The test hardware is structurally identical to the flight version of the liquid hydrogen tank that will comprise two-thirds of the core stage and hold 537,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen cooled to minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit.

FH.

Wyznaczono załogę  ;) dla pierwszej okołoksiężycowej misji Oriona:

Meet Helga and Zohar, the dummies destined for a pioneering lunar flyby to help protect space travelers from cosmic rays and energetic solar storms.

These two female phantoms will occupy the passenger seats during Orion's first mission around the Moon, going further than any human has flown before. Fitted with more than 5600 sensors, the pair will measure the amount of radiation astronauts could be exposed to in future missions with unprecedented precision.

Zbiornik ciekłego wodoru pierwszego stopnia rakiety SLS testowany w ośrodku Marshall Space Flight Center w Huntsville w stanie Alabama. Jest to egzemplarz identyczny strukturalnie z egzemplarzem przeznaczonym do pierwszego lotu rakiety SLS i mieści 537,000 galonów ciekłego wodoru.
Zdjęcie wykonano 14 stycznia 2019.

Czyżby przygotowania do Exploration Mision 1 goverment shutdown nie dotyczył? :) Przecież 14 stycznia NASA miała mieć urlop (z wyjątkiem JPL i innych nieco bardziej niezależnych ośrodków)  :)

The top half of the first NASA Space Launch System (SLS) Core Stage now stands assembled in a vertical stacking cell at the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans. Prime contractor Boeing bolted the three elements, the forward skirt, the liquid oxygen (LOX) tank, and the intertank together in January at Michoud.

After connecting the elements, Boeing is working to button up the “forward join” and get the assembly ready to connect to the rest of the stage later in the year. Technicians are working in Cell D at MAF to install the remaining major hardware pieces inside the join, plug cabling together, and cover the bolted connections with insulating foam.
