LEGO reveals space shuttle Discovery with Hubble Space Telescope

March 22, 2021 — Once described as the most complex flying machine ever built, comprised of more than 2.5 million moving parts, you can now assemble your own model of NASA's space shuttle using just 2,354 pieces.

1) The new LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery set reproduces the winged orbiter and Hubble Space Telescope in detail. (LEGO)
2) Astronaut Kathy Sullivan, who flew aboard space shuttle Discovery, holds LEGO's new set modeled after her STS-31 mission. (LEGO)

Universal Astronaut Insignia to unite space explorers and travelers

The first device to signify that the wearer had flown into space, the Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR badge, was awarded to cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in April 1961. (RIA Novosti/Wikipedia / collectSPACE)

April 12, 2021 — Two days after Yuri Gagarin became the world's first person to fly into space, his country, the former Soviet Union, presented him a small, military-style insignia representing that he was a Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR.

The first-of-its-kind device, depicting a satellite and spacecraft in orbit over Earth, would go on to be presented to every Soviet cosmonaut who made a spaceflight through 1991, and then, after a slight redesign, awarded to every Pilot-Cosmonaut of the Russian Federation to this day.

A similar practice began in the United States in December 1961, eight months after Gagarin was honored, when the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force bestowed Alan Shepard and Virgil "Gus" Grissom with their respective branch's astronaut wings. The similar devices both featured at their center a five-pointed star with three trailing rays passing through a halo — a symbol that later would be adapted as a lapel pin to be worn by NASA astronauts, with a gold version for those who launched into space.

Od początku ery załogowych lotów kosmicznych astronauci wykonali z kosmosu ponad 1,5 mln zdjęć

Over the last 60 years, @NASA_Astronauts have taken more than 1.5 million photos of Earth from space. These photos help record how Earth is changing over time, including human-caused changes and dynamic events such as hurricanes, floods & volcanic eruptions. #WorldPhotographyDay

Można domniemywać, że przydałby się osobny moduł treningowy  ;)

Jaką odznakę przyznać astronautom misji Inspiration4?
ASE i Robert Pearlman nie mają wątpliwości.

You can buy your way into space on a billionaire's ship. Did you 'earn' the same pin as astronauts?
Andrea Leinfelder, Staff writer Sep. 21, 2021

(...) On the Inspiration4 mission that launched last week, SpaceX listed its four passengers as spaceflight participants in FAA documents.

“When the program was first created in 2004, its focus was to recognize flight crew members who furthered the FAA’s mission to promote the safety of vehicles designed to carry humans,” the FAA said in an email. (...)

There is one organization that will offer a pin to anyone who reaches space. The Webster-based Association of Space Explorers created a pin, called the Universal Astronaut Insignia, this year to unite all individuals who have gone into space. It has a pin for people who take quick suborbital missions and a pin for those who circle the globe.

“That was sort of the purpose,” Pearlman said, “to remove any question if you are an astronaut or not. Everyone would be acknowledged and registered.”
