President Nixon's 1972 Announcement on the Space Shuttle

https://history.nasa.gov/stsnixon.htm

Cytuj

Editorial Headnote: President Richard M. Nixon and NASA Administrator James C. Fletcher announced the Space Shuttle program had received final approval in San Clemente, California, on 5 January 1972.

The Statement by President Nixon, 5 January 1972.

I have decided today that the United States should proceed at once with the development of an entirely new type of space transportation system designed to help transform the space frontier of the 1970's into familiar territory, easily accessible for human endeavor in the 1980's and '90's.

This system will center on a space vehicle that can shuttle repeatedly from Earth to orbit and back. It will revolutionize transportation into near space, by routinizing it. It will take the astronomical costs out of astronautics. In short, it will go a long way toward delivering the rich benefits of practical space utilization and the valuable spinoffs from space efforts into the daily lives of Americans and all people.

The new year 1972 is a year of conclusion for America's current series of manned flights to the Moon. Much is expected from the two remaining Apollo missions - in fact, their scientific results should exceed the return from all the earlier flights together. Thus they will place a fitting capstone on this vastly successful undertaking. But they also bring us to an important decision point - a point of assessing what our space horizons are as Apollo ends, and of determining where we go from here.

In the scientific arena, the past decade of experience has taught us that spacecraft are an irreplaceable tool for learning about our near-Earth space environment, the Moon, and the planets, besides being an important aid to our studies of the Sun and stars. In utilizing space to meet needs on Earth, we have seen the tremendous potential of satellites for international communications and world-wide weather forecasting. We are gaining the capability to use satellites as tools in global monitoring and management of nature resources, in agricultural applications, and in pollution control. We can foresee their use in guiding airliners across the oceans and in bringing TV education to wide areas of the world.

However, all these possibilities, and countless others with direct and dramatic bearing on human betterment, can never be more than fractionally realized so long as every single trip from Earth to orbit remains a matter of special effort and staggering expense. This is why commitment to the Space Shuttle program is the right step for America to take, in moving out from our present beach-head in the sky to achieve a real working presence in space - because the Space Shuttle will give us routine access to space by sharply reducing costs in dollars and preparation time.

The new system will differ radically from all existing booster systems, in that most of this new system will be recovered and used again and again - up to 100 times. The resulting economies may bring operating costs down as low as one-tenth of those present launch vehicles.

The resulting changes in modes of flight and re-entry will make the ride safer, and less demanding for the passengers, so that men and women with work to do in space can "commute" aloft, without having to spend years in training for the skills and rigors of old-style space flight. As scientists and technicians are actually able to accompany their instruments into space, limiting boundaries between our manned and unmanned space programmes will disappear. Development of new space applications will be able to proceed much faster. Repair or servicing of satellites in space will become possible, as will delivery of valuable payloads from orbit back to Earth.

The general reliability and versatility which the Shuttle system offers seems likely to establish it quickly as the workhorse of our whole space effort, taking the place of all present launch vehicles except the very smallest and very largest.

NASA and many aerospace companies have carried out extensive design studies for the Shuttle. Congress has reviewed and approved this effort. Preparation is now sufficient for us to commence the actual work of construction with full confidence of success. In order to minimize technical and economic risks, the space agency will continue to take a cautious evolutionary approach in the development of this new system. Even so, by moving ahead at this time, we can have the Shuttle in manned flight by 1978, and operational a short time later.

It is also significant that this major new national enterprise will engage the best efforts of thousands of highly skilled workers and hundreds of contractor firms over the next several years. The amazing 'technology explosion' that has swept this country in the years since we ventured into space should remind us that robust activity in the aerospace industry is healthy for everyone - not just in jobs and income, but in the extension of our capabilities in every direction. The continued pre-eminence of America and American industry in the aerospace field will be an important part of the Shuttle's 'payload'.

Views of the Earth from space have shown us how small and fragile our home planet truly is. We are learning the imperatives of universal brotherhood and global ecology learning to think and act as guardians of one tiny blue and green island in the trackless oceans of the Universe. This new program will give more people more access to the liberating perspectives of space, even as it extends our ability to cope with physical challenges of Earth and broadens our opportunities for international cooperation in low-cost, multi-purpose space missions.

'We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it', said Oliver Wendell Holmes, 'but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor'. So with man's epic voyage into space - a voyage the United States of America has led and still shall lead.

Statement by Dr. Fletcher, NASA Administrator.

As indicated in the President's statement, the studies by NASA and the aerospace industry of the Space Shuttle have now reached the point where the decision can be made to proceed into actual development of the Space Shuttle vehicle. The decision to proceed, which the President has now approved, is consistent with the plans presented to and approved by the Congress in NASA's FY 1972 budget.

The decision by the President is a historic step in the nation's space program - it will change the nature of what man can do in space. By the end of this decade the nation will have the means of getting men and equipment to and from space routinely, on a moment's notice if necessary, and at a small fraction of today's cost. This will be done within the framework of a useful total space program of science, exploration, and applications at approximately the present overall level of the space budget.

The Space Shuttle will consist of an aircraft-like orbiter, about the size of a DC-9. It will be capable of carrying into orbit and back again to Earth useful payloads up to 15 ft. in diameter by 60 ft. long, and weighing up to 65,000 lb. Fuel for the orbiter's liquid-hydrogen / liquid-oxygen engines will be carried in an external tank that will be jettisoned in orbit.

The orbiter will be launched by an unmanned booster.

The orbiter can operate in space for about a week. The men onboard will be able to launch, service, or recover unmanned spacecraft; perform experiments and other useful operations in Earth orbit; and farther in the future resupply with men and equipment space modules which themselves have been brought to space by the Space Shuttle. When each mission has been completed, the Space Shuttle will return to Earth and land on a runway like an airplane.

There are four main reasons why the Space Shuttle is important and is the right step in manned space flight and the US space program.

    The Shuttle is the only meaningful new manned space program which can be accomplished on a modest budget;
    It is needed to make space operations less complex and less costly;
It is needed to do useful things, and
It will encourage greater international participation in space flight.

On the basis of today's decision, NASA will proceed as follows;

This spring we will issue a request for prospective contractors. This summer we will place Space Shuttle under contract and development work will start. Between now and about the end of February, NASA and our contractors will focus their study efforts on technical areas where further detailed information is required before the requests for contractor proposals can be issued. These areas include comparisons of pressure-fed liquid and solid rocket motor options for the booster stage.

Endowed with the stunning success of the Apollo program, yet faced with the exorbitant costs of NASA, President Nixon considered a space policy shift in the second year of his presidency. On March 7, 1970, President Nixon made public his intention to redirect the NASA vision. He released a statement which detailed his administration’s approach to continued space exploration and research efforts at a more manageable cost to the nation.

We must think of [space activities] as part of a continuing process… and not as a series of separate leaps, each requiring a massive concentration of energy. Space expenditures must take their proper place within a rigorous system of national priorities. … What we do in space from here on in must become a normal and regular part of our national life and must therefore be planned in conjunction with all of the other undertakings which are important to us.

President Nixon was not necessarily paring down the efforts of the nation’s space program, but rather attempting to instill a withstanding national paradigm. It was his hope that space exploration would become a component of national priorities, in line with the nation’s many domestic programs and as a result a staple of American government. It would compete, along with other national programs, for the government’s limited resources.

President Nixon’s aim to reprioritize this “massive concentration” of energy given to NASA began when he created the Space Task Group to study the future possibilities of the space program in February of 1969. After several months of examination, the Space Task Group sent the Nixon administration their recommendations in October.

One of the principle recommendations by the Space Task Group included developing “low-cost, flexible, long-lived, highly reliable, operational space systems with a high degree of commonality and reusability.” In other words, NASA should be tasked with constructing something along the lines of a reusable shuttle.

The unveiling of the space shuttle program became reality at the beginning of President Nixon’s iconic year of 1972. On January 5, RN met with Dr. James C. Fletcher, NASA Administrator, to discuss the proposed space shuttle vehicle.

Shortly after the meeting, the President issued a statement announcing the commencement of the Shuttle Program, closing the book on the Apollo program and opening another for the future of space exploration.

This new program will give more people more access to the liberating perspectives of space, even as it extends our ability to cope with physical challenges of Earth and broadens our opportunities for international cooperation in low-cost, multi-purpose space missions.

On December 19, 1972, Apollo 17 reentered Earth’s atmosphere, marking an end to the prestigious and largely successful Apollo program. President Nixon shared a message with the American people about the future of the space program assuring that “the making of space history would continue,” albeit at a more steady and economically viable pace.

President Nixon described the possibilities the space shuttle would bring:

Economy in space will be further served by the Space Shuttle, which is presently under development. It will enable us to ferry space research hardware into orbit without requiring the full expenditure of a launch vehicle as is necessary today. It will permit us to place that hardware in space accurately, and to service or retrieve it when necessary instead of simply writing it off in the event it malfunctions or fails. In addition, the Shuttle will provide such routine access to space that for the first time personnel other than trained astronauts will be able to participate and contribute in space as will nations once excluded for economic reasons.

The Space Shuttle program, retired in 2011, continued for 39 years–the longest yet program launched by NASA. It produced 135 total flights and countless cutting-edge research missions. It is safe to say that space travel and exploration as we know it today was a result of President Nixon’s decision to economize the American space program in 1972.

Mars Polar Lander
03.01.1999 o 20:21:10,332 UT z Cape Canaveral wystartowała rakieta Delta 2, z sondami  Mars Polar Lander oraz
Deep Space 2.

a nieco później z penetratorów Deep Space 2. Dźwięki z powierzchni Marsa zostaną przekazane 4 grudnia,
film z MARDI 6-10.12. Kolorową panoramę okolicy lądownika ujrzymy około 10.12. Wysięgnik zostanie
uruchomiony 7.12, a analiza pierwszej próbki zostanie dokonana 8.12.

Planowany rzeczywisty czas lądowania to 20:00:26 UT.

Prawdopodobnie oznacza to
do spowodowania spłonięcia całego zestawu w atmosferze Marsa.

Misja MPL uznana za fiasko
07.12.1999 w trakcie konferencji prasowej w Jet Propulsion Laboratory szef projektu Mars Polar Lander Richard
Cook oficjalnie uznał fiasko misji MPL i Deep Space 2.

Raport o przyczynach niepowodzenia MPL
28.03.2000 komisja NASA d/s wyjaśnienia przyczyn katastrofy misji sond Mars Polar Lander i Deep Space 2
pośrednie, niedoinwestowanie projektu i  zaniedbania w testowaniu wielu podsystemów.

Mars is hard
25 years ago today, NASA's Mars Polar Lander (MPL) was launched. Designed to land near Mars' south polar cap and dig for water-ice with a robotic arm, contact with the lander was lost upon atmospheric entry.

Mars Polar Lander
03.01.1999 o 20:21:10,332 UT z Cape Canaveral wystartowała rakieta Delta 2, z sondami  Mars Polar Lander oraz
Deep Space 2.

a nieco później z penetratorów Deep Space 2. Dźwięki z powierzchni Marsa zostaną przekazane 4 grudnia,
film z MARDI 6-10.12. Kolorową panoramę okolicy lądownika ujrzymy około 10.12. Wysięgnik zostanie
uruchomiony 7.12, a analiza pierwszej próbki zostanie dokonana 8.12.

Planowany rzeczywisty czas lądowania to 20:00:26 UT.

Prawdopodobnie oznacza to
do spowodowania spłonięcia całego zestawu w atmosferze Marsa.

Strona internetowa projektu Mars Polar Lander.
http://lk.astronautilus.pl/n991201.htm#03

Misja MPL uznana za fiasko
07.12.1999 w trakcie konferencji prasowej w Jet Propulsion Laboratory szef projektu Mars Polar Lander Richard
Cook oficjalnie uznał fiasko misji MPL i Deep Space 2.

Raport o przyczynach niepowodzenia MPL
28.03.2000 komisja NASA d/s wyjaśnienia przyczyn katastrofy misji sond Mars Polar Lander i Deep Space 2
pośrednie, niedoinwestowanie projektu i  zaniedbania w testowaniu wielu podsystemów.

zestaw komend uruchomił rejestrator lotu (czarną skrzynką) i dane z niego poczęły napływać poprzez DSN

Zasoby energetyczne sondy (a zwłaszcza materiał

https://history.nasa.gov/isstestimony2001.pdf

Explorer 1: The start of the American Space Age
Today marks the 60th anniversary of the launch of America’s first satellite, Explorer 1, which ushered the United States into the Space Race.
By Jake Parks  |  Published: Wednesday, January 31, 2018

Sixty years ago today, the United States used a modified German V-2 rocket to send the country's first satellite, Explorer 1, into orbit around the Earth. This momentous achievement was just the first step in a long journey that has already allowed us to explore every planet in the solar system, as well as interstellar space itself.

“The launch of Explorer 1 marked the beginning of U.S. spaceflight, as well as the scientific exploration of space, which led to a series of bold missions that have opened humanity’s eyes to new wonders of the solar system,” said Michael Watkins, current director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in a press release. “It was a watershed moment for the nation that also defined who we are at JPL.” (...)

Science from Explorer 1

Much like Sputnik 1 and 2, Explorer 1 was more than just a proof of concept; it was intended to collect valuable scientific data. Explorer 1 had three main scientific objectives: to record the temperature above Earth’s atmosphere, to monitor micrometeorite impacts, and, most importantly, to explore the radiation environment around Earth by using Van Allen’s Geiger tubes to hunt for cosmic rays.

“[Van Allen] had the relationship with Von Braun via the captured V-2s,” said Gurnett. “And Van Allen was building Geiger tubes, putting them on top of V-2s, and shooting them up in the atmosphere. The reason being that Van Allen was interested in cosmic rays, and there was an increase in the cosmic ray intensity (not much, but an increase) as you go up to higher altitudes, like 40-60 kilometers.”

Although Van Allen expected Explorer 1 to show that cosmic rays were most prevalent high above the atmosphere, the Geiger tube aboard the satellite appeared to detect very little radiation. “They thought the instrument was broke because it wasn’t counting at all,” said Gurnett, “but it turns out the flux was so high it was causing the Geiger tube to go into continuous discharge.” Explorer 3 later confirmed the excessive radiation beyond Earth's atmosphere.

With this finding, Van Allen had made the first great discovery of the Space Age. He found that doughnut-shaped regions of high-energy particles that are held in place by Earth’s magnetic field surround our planet. However, initially, the Soviets were skeptical of the discovery.

“There’s all kinds of stories about this which I later learned when I started working with Van Allen," said Gurnett. "The [Soviets] thought that the United States created the radiation belt with a nuclear weapon, and, as matter of fact, Van Allen went to Russia to a meeting…and I guess convinced them that, no, no, it was a natural radiation belt.” The radiation belts have since been dubbed the Van Allen belts.

A Geiger tube carried by Explorer 1 detected so much radiation while in orbit that researchers initially thought it was malfunctioning. However, Explorer 3 later confirmed the findings, proving that regions of high-energy particles — later named the Van Allen belts — surround the Earth. NASA

Pierwsza grupa astronautów i astronautek nowej ery.

Thirty-Five New Guys Reunite

In January of 1978, NASA announced its newest class of Astronauts. There would be thirty-five in the class.

It would include women and minorities for the first time.

They came from across the nation: big cities and farms, Ivy League schools and state colleges, civilian and military, pilots and scientists, Protestants, Catholics, Jews, atheists…and one Buddhist. There were fifteen designated as Pilots and twenty as Missions Specialists. The group decided to call themselves The Thirty-Five New Guys, or TFNGs. I was one of the “guys.” When we met and eyed each other for the first time that day 41 years ago, we knew that our lives would be intertwined in the coming years, but most of us were clueless about what to expect.

NASA had never taken a group this huge, this diverse. The largest group of new selectees before had been 19 in 1966 during the heyday of the Apollo program. NASA had taken test pilots for the early space flights—which truly were “test flights”—that went from sub-orbital, to orbital, to flights to the moon. Each step was different and needed the expertise of highly-skilled pilots to handle the many unknowns.

TFNG Patch

By the mid-seventies with the Space Shuttle preparing for launch, it became clear that the Astronaut Office would have to expand. There would be many more flights with the reusable vehicle with crews of up to seven each. There would be varied cargoes on the Shuttle, and it would be helpful to have Astronauts skilled in the scientific payloads. “Affirmative Action” was required by then and the Astronaut Corps could not remain all white male…much to the displeasure of some from the Apollo-era all-white-male world

There were questions and surprises as the TFNGs began their training. Could academics and doctors make it through water survival training? Would they get sick in the back seat of the T-38 jets? Would non-engineers understand the intricacies of a huge new vehicle and cargo operations? A few things came up that they should have been expecting but had not anticipated. What if two Astronauts married and then one of them got pregnant? Everything seemed to work out because all thirty-five of the TFNGs supported each other, and all had the joy of flying in space.

40th Reunion

By the time almost all the TFNGs left the Astronaut program, it had set many records.

Altogether they flew 122 flights and 13 of the pilots were Shuttle Commanders.

I was incredibly proud to be one of the TFNGs. Through the many years of laughter and sorrow, we had bonded as a group.

In December 2018, twenty-five of us (of the twenty-six still living) came together for a 40th reunion to celebrate those times.

We didn’t look like we had in our younger days, but there was still a bond of friendship and shared memories of the TFNGs days that would last forever.
