A blockchain entrepreneur, a cinematographer, a polar adventurer and a robotics researcher plan to fly around Earth’s poles aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule by end of year, becoming the first humans to observe the ice caps and extreme polar environments from orbit, SpaceX announced Monday.

Crypto entrepreneur buys Crew Dragon flight
Jeff Foust August 13, 2024

(...) SpaceX announced Aug. 12 that it will launch a private astronaut mission called Fram2 as soon as late 2024. The Crew Dragon will launch into a polar orbit from Florida, flying at an altitude of 425 to 450 kilometers during a mission lasting three to five days. No crewed mission has flown in a polar orbit before, with the highest inclination being about 65 degrees. (...)

Wang is also not a native of Malta, having been born and raised in China, later moving to South Korea. He announced on social media in August 2023 he had become a citizen of Malta, but did not explain why. Malta offers several paths for citizenship, including residency in the country and through investment, and Malta, as part of the European Union, can offer greater options for visa-free international travel. (...)

Joining Wang on the mission will be Jannicke Mikkelsen of Norway, who will be vehicle commander; Eric Philips of Australia as vehicle pilot; and Rabea Rogge of Germany as mission specialist. SpaceX has previously not used the designation of “vehicle commander” on Crew Dragon missions, and it is not clear the difference between that role and that of Wang mission commander. (...)

I had the pleasure of briefly speaking with the crew of FRAM2 - @framonauts, Chun Wang - @satofishi, Jannicke Mikkelsen - @astro_jannicke, Eric Philips - @Icetrek, and Rabea Rogge, who will be the first crew to fly over the north and south poles! Here's a few fun notes:

They will be flying from Florida, not sure yet whether it's LC-39A or SCL-40. The profile is quite unique to be able to accommodate crew on a southern trajectory, but we didn't have time to get further into it.

The mission WILL feature the cupola that we first saw fly with @inspiration4x, which is VERY exciting considering they'll be flying over both the fully illuminated south pole as well as the northern lights on each pass!

I asked them about safety considerations of flying over the poles and they said it's not considered to be much. more dangerous than standard LEO missions in regards to radiation

The crew found out in December, 2023 when Chun individually asked them to take part in this mission with him. They have all worked together and befriended each other previously on a North Pole mission.

The idea for the polar mission is entirely Chun's idea, he brought the idea to SpaceX and purchased the ride after considering other mission options, but wasn't interested in just purchasing one seat.

They get to pre-plan orientation of the spacecraft for the best views and filming opportunities for each pass, which is awesome.

Crypto magnate buys SpaceX mission for private polar spaceflight expedition
Published Tue, Aug 13 202411:03 AM EDT Michael Sheetz

(...) For the mission, Wang invited a trio of Arctic specialists to join him: Jannicke Mikkelsen, 38, a Norwegian filmmaker; Eric Philips, 62, an Australian explorer and guide; and Rabea Rogge, 28, a German researcher.

“I’ve been interested in space from a very young age … and for the first time, a private person can plan and design their own very personal mission,” Wang told CNBC.

Wang, 42, was born in Tianjin, China, but now hails from the Mediterranean island country of Malta, having become a citizen last year. Wang said he met his fellow crewmembers while living in Svalbard, the far north Norwegian archipelago, and describes himself as “nomadic,” having visited more than 100 countries the past few years. SpaceX announces first human mission to ever fly over the planet’s poles
Eric Berger - 8/13/2024, 12:45 AM

The highest-inclination flight by a human spacecraft to date is 65.1 degrees.

(...) In an interview, Wang said he became a billionaire in 2021 after the price of bitcoin, dogecoin, and other cryptocurrencies surged. He had long been interested in space, Wang added, and so he began talking to SpaceX about purchasing a seat on a private Dragon mission. In 2023 the discussions matured, and Wang realized that if he bought an entire mission he could set its parameters.

He wanted to try something new, and flying a polar mission aligned with his interests in cold places on Earth. The highest-inclination flight ever by a human spacecraft was the Soviet Vostok 6 mission in 1963, when Valentina Tereshkova's spacecraft reached 65.1 degrees. Now, Fram2 will fly repeatedly and directly over the poles. (...)
