Nie ustalili budżetu. Problemem jest mur, na który Trump chce około 5 mld dolarów. 3 stycznia część parlamentarzystów się wymieni (po ostatnich wyborach) i Demokraci przeforsują ustawę budżetową.

It kinda depends on how much the spacecraft actually uses during the flyby (all pointing is done with thursters, so observations take prop), but I think it's less than 100 m/s.

Z tą ilością paliwa będzie pewnie problem żeby znaleźć jakikolwiek kolejny obiekt do przelotu...

(...) Since Ultima Thule is so small and dim, that means that conducting a flyby of it is more difficult than Pluto.

“This flyby is a lot harder than Pluto,” said New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern. “Ultima is tiny, and faint, much harder to navigate on… Another difficulty, or challenge, really, is that we’re farther away, and that means communication times are longer. Bit rates are lower.”

“It’s a one-shot, ‘get it right or go home’ deal, because there’s no U-turn to go back and have a re-do… You have to plan every chess move with the spacecraft more carefully.”

Z tą ilością paliwa będzie pewnie problem żeby znaleźć jakikolwiek kolejny obiekt do przelotu...

Do bliskiego raczej ciężko, ale na pewno będą obserwacje jakichś celów z daleka.

Przyszłość przedstawia się obiecująco. Chyba niedlugo będzie potrzeba założenie wątku: New Horizons - misja rozszerzona II

(...) "The spacecraft is very healthy," said Alan Stern, principal investigator for the New Horizons mission, during a livestreamed event about the project Friday. "We have the power and the fuel to run into the mid-2030s." (...)

They're excited for what comes next, too. Stern said researchers will start searching for the next fly-by object in 2021.

"The Kuiper Belt is vast -- we'll be there until the late 2020s," Stern said. "We will propose to NASA to explore the outer belts of the Kuiper Belt next."

The belt is a grouping of icy bodies just outside Neptune's orbit where Pluto is found.

Stern added that scientists will use "the biggest and most capable tools around" to find the next fly-by object. That could mean Hubble Space Telescope if it is still working, James Webb Space Telescope if it operating in space by then or the spacecraft's own camera.  (...)

All About Ultima: New Horizons Flyby Target is Unlike Anything Explored in Space

(...) From its brightness and size, New Horizons team members have calculated Ultima's reflectivity, which is only about 10 percent, or about as dark as garden dirt. Beyond that, nothing else is known about it — basic facts like its rotational period and whether or not it has moons are unknown.

"All that is about to dramatically change on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day," said New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern, also of SwRI. "New Horizons will map Ultima, map its surface composition, determine how many moons it has and find out if it has rings or even an atmosphere. It will make other studies, too, such as measuring Ultima's temperature and perhaps even its mass. In the space of one 72-hour period, Ultima will be transformed from a pinpoint of light — a dot in the distance — to a fully explored world. It should be breathtaking!"

"New Horizons is performing observations at the frontier of planetary science," said Project Scientist Hal Weaver, of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, "and the entire team looks forward to unveiling the most distant and pristine object ever explored during a spacecraft flyby."

"From Ultima's orbit, we know that it is the most primordial object ever explored. I'm excited to see the surface features of this small world, particularly the craters on the surface," said Deputy Project Scientist Cathy Olkin, of SwRI. "Young craters could provide a window to see the composition of the subsurface of Ultima. Also by counting the number and impactors that have hit Ultima, we can learn about the number of small objects in the outer solar system." (...)

Hehe, jak na razie na dostępnych fotkach RAW niewiele widać.

Chyba teraz sonda przesyła na Ziemię pierwsze obrazki "Failsafe", na wypadek, gdyby przelot się nie udał. Na fotkach będzie można zobaczyć kilka pikseli.
