#OTD 40 years ago, the crew of STS-8 paused for a photo as they prepared for their Aug. 30, 1983 launch. This would be Challenger's third flight, and Guy Bluford would become NASA's first Black astronaut to go to space.Read more about STS-8 https://go.nasa.gov/3OGl3G2

Association of Space Explorers @ASE_Astronauts#OTD 40 years ago ✨STS-8 launched on August 30, 1983, with ASE members Daniel Brandenstein, Richard Truly, and William Thornton aboard!
Bill Nelson @SenBillNelson·On Aug. 30, 1983, former NASA astronaut Guy Bluford became the first African American in space when the STS-8 mission launched from @NASAKennedy. Because of the pioneers who broke barriers in space exploration, we will soon land the first person of color on the Moon!
Challenger launched OTD in 1983 (the 1st US crewed night launch since Apollo 17) to begin the 6+d STS-8 mission. Post-flight analysis revealed out-of-limits corrosion of the LH SRB resin lining to 0.5 cm narrowly averting a catastrophic failure, & potential loss of vehicle & crew
