02.06.1975 odbył się lot samolotu  NASA Convair 900 w ramach projektu ASSESS 1 (Airborne Scientific Shuttle Experiments Systems Simulation).
5-6 godzinne loty NASA Convair 900 miały na celu podjęcia decyzji o przyszłych eksperymentach w Spacelab, które zostaną przetestowane w maju 1977 roku przez Karla Henize i Roberta Parkera.

11.06.1978 NASA ogłosiła wybór astronautów Spacelab wraz z 3 Europejczykami wybranymi przez ESA 7 miesięcy wcześniej.
Lampton zmarł w czerwcu 2023 w wieku 82 lat. Nigdy nie poleciał w kosmos.

ESA dokonała selekcji specjalistów ładunku spośród swojego korpusu astronautów, a NASA przeprowadziła selekcję amerykańską.

Puis au lieu d'avoir une sélection purement allemande, c'est l'ESA qui va sélectionner dans son corps d'astronautes, et pareil pour la NASA qui va reprendre la sélection US.

2) Water and coffee in beverage container during the STS-9/Spacelab-1 flight. An extra amount of hydrogen in the water (H2O) is believed to be the reason for the bubbling distended effect in the container ( S09-126-456 - STS-009)

4) Though STS-9 was the Space Shuttle Columbia's sixth spaceflight, it was the first opportunity for an onboard galley, some of the results of which are shown in this 35mm scene on the flight deck. The metal tray makes for easy preparation and serving of in-space meals for crew members. This astronaut is seated at the pilot's station on the flight deck. The actual galley is located in the middeck (STS009-05-0153)

STS-9 Commander John Young piloted Columbia to a smooth landing at Edwards AFB, 40 years ago today. The orbiter completed 166 orbits of Earth in 10 days, the longest Shuttle flight at that time.
