#OTD in 1960, Pilot Robert White made his first flight in the X-15. Between 1960 and 1962, he made 16 flights in the rocket-powered aircraft, becoming the first pilot to fly at Mach 4, 5 and 6. He was also the first to fly a winged vehicle past 50 miles altitude on July 17, 1962.
