Deszcz diamentów na Uranie i Neptunie
BY MATEUSZ OLSZEWSKI ON 6 WRZEŚNIA 2017

By odtworzyć te warunki międzynarodowy zespół poddał próbkę polistyrenu dwóm falom uderzeniowym używając do tego intensywnego lasera optycznego w urządzeniu Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC), gdzie mogli połączyć je z impulsami promieniowania rentgenowskiego ze SLAC Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS).

Study of Uranus suggests some of its moons are on a collision course
September 6, 2017 by Bob Yirka

In studying the orbits of the moons, the researchers found that Cressida is on a path that will cause it to collide with another moon called Desdemona, which currently moves in an orbit just 900 kilometers from Cressida's. The gravity of Cressida is slowly pulling them closer together and will cause them to crash into one another in approximately 1 million years. They also found the same to be true for Cupid and Belinda, which will collide sometime later.

China also plans to launch probes to Jupiter in 2036 and Uranus in 2046, Zhang said. However, these planets are so far away from the sun that light is too weak to power solar-powered probes. Chemical propulsion systems face long-term storage issues and an even harsher environment in space, he added.

Ciekawe czemu do powyższej prezentacji użyto obrazków z NASA?

E, pewnie na odwrocie tych nasa'owskich renderków jest dopisek "made in China" :D

In computer simulations, the researchers found that an Earth-size rock striking a newborn Uranus could have helped give the planet its current tilt. At the same time, the simulations found that the rubble from the impact could go on to collapse and form moons with orbits and masses similar to those of Uranus' actual moons.

"Material from the two bodies is ejected in a debris disk, and finally satellites are formed from the debris disk," Ishizawa told Space.com. "It is possible to explain the axial tilt and the formation of the regular satellites of Uranus simultaneously."

NASA Completes Study of Future ‘Ice Giant’ Mission Concepts
June 20, 2017

A NASA-led and NASA-sponsored study of potential future missions to the mysterious “ice giant” planets Uranus and Neptune has been released—the first in a series of mission studies NASA will conduct in support of the next Planetary Science Decadal Survey. The results of this and future studies will be used as the Decadal Survey deliberates on NASA’s planetary science priorities from 2022-2032. The study identifies the scientific questions an ice giant mission should address, and discusses various instruments, spacecraft, flight-paths and technologies that could be used. (...)

A variety of potential mission concepts are discussed in the study, including orbiters, flybys, and probes that would dive into Uranus’ atmosphere to study its composition. A narrow-angle camera would send data back to Earth about the ice giants and their moons. Uranus has 27 known moons, while Neptune has 14. (...)

Na Ziemi daje sie zauważyć zmienną aktywność procesów atmosferycznych  Urana, zależneych od  cykli aktywności słonecznej.

Sunlight holds the key to planet’s shine
December 22, 2017, University of Oxford

"The changing brightness of the planet shows that something is happening to the clouds. We have found that the change is caused by two processes.

"One is chemical, caused as fluctuating levels of UV sunlight alters the colour of particles in the atmosphere. The other is due to high-speed particles from outside the solar system, known as galactic cosmic rays, bombarding the atmosphere and influencing the formation of clouds."

The scientists used data from telescopes on Earth, as well as cosmic rays measured by the Voyager 2 spacecraft, to make their assessment.

Professor Harrison said: "The sun has a magnetic field, diverting cosmic rays away from the solar system, including here on Earth. This protection is reduced when solar activity is at its lowest every 11 years, meaning more cosmic radiation gets through.
