(...)The rocket’s Swiss-made payload shroud jettisoned after the initial climb above Earth’s atmosphere. (...)

The four-satellite program is costing Airbus about 600 million euros, or roughly $700 million.

The Pléiades Neo satellites can produce optical imagery of Earth’s surface with a resolution of 11.8 inches, or 30 centimeters, according to Airbus. That’s good enough to resolve features such as vehicles and road markings. (...)

The imaging resolution of Airbus’s four Pléiades Neo satellites is comparable to the resolution provided by Maxar’s six-satellite WorldView Legion surveillance satellites due to begin launching next year. The companies are competitors, providing the highest-resolution Earth observation imagery on the global commercial market.

With the help of laser inter-satellite communications links, the Pléiades Neo satellites will be able to respond rapidly to tasking requests within 30 to 40 minutes, according to Airbus. (...)

(...) U.S. military tracking data indicated the rocket’s Yuanzheng 1S upper stage delivered the two satellites, known by the Chinese acronym RSW, into an orbit about 680 miles (1,100 kilometers) above Earth with an inclination of 89.4 degrees to the equator.

An unidentified third satellite, also with a communications tech demo mission, was also on-board the Long March 2C rocket.

China is planning to launch a constellation of up to 13,000 satellites to provide global internet connectivity, according to regulatory filings with the International Telecommunication Union. (...)

In a sign that China is making plans for the large-scale deployment of a satellite constellation, the Long March 2C rocket launched Tuesday debuted a new 13.8-foot-diameter (4.2-meter) payload fairing. The nose shroud is wider than fairings flown on past Long March 2C rockets, giving each launcher a larger payload volume to accommodate more satellites on a single mission.

The Long March 2C rocket also launched with a tube-shaped multi-satellite adapter structure inside its payload fairing. (...)

China launches another geostationary military satellite
August 25, 2021 Stephen Clark

A Long March 3B rocket takes off with the TJS 7 satellite. Credit: CASC

(...) The launch aboard a Long March 3B rocket, which occurred at 11:41 p.m. Beijing time, was the second Chinese space mission to ascend into orbit Tuesday. Earlier in the day, a Long March 2C rocket launched from the Jiuquan space center in northwestern China with a group of test satellites for a Chinese space-based broadband network. (...)

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., or CASC, the government-run contractor that oversees the Chinese space program, said the TJS 7 satellite will be “mainly used to carry out communication technology test missions.”

But that is likely a cover for a clandestine military mission. Analysts believe the TJS series of satellites actually serve the Chinese military, providing early warning and intelligence-gathering functions.

CASC said the TJS 7 satellite was developed by subsidiary organization called the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology. That could indicate the TJS 7 spacecraft carries infrared sensors to collect data on foreign missile launches for the Chinese military, according to Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and an expert in spaceflight activity.

Gaofen 5-02 satellite launched from Taiyuan
By Zhao Lei | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2021-09-07 12:05

China launched the Gaofen 5-02 Earth-observation satellite on Tuesday morning at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi province, according to the China National Space Administration.

The administration said the satellite was carried by a Long March 4C carrier rocket that blasted off at 11:01 am and then successfully entered orbit, marking the deployment of the 24th Gaofen-series spacecraft and the 387th flight of the Long March rocket fleet.

Developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology based on its SAST3000 satellite platform, the Gaofen 5-02 is equipped with hyperspectral observational devices tasked with monitoring air, water and environments, according to China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, the country's major space contractor and parent company of the academy.

(...) Gaofen 5-02 is beginning a planned eight-year mission with a multi-channel optical hyperspectral imaging instrument capable of detecting variations in land cover, such as different types of vegetation and urban growth. The hyperspectral sensor can also resolve water quality.

The satellite’s predecessor, Gaofen 5-01, also carried payloads to track air pollution and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Gaofen 5-02 is believed to host a similar instrument suite.

China’s official Xinhua news agency said the satellite was developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, a subsidiary of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., the government-run prime contractor for the Chinese space program.

Chinese satellite detects methane leaks in US
By China Daily | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2022-11-09 16:43

China's Gaofen 5B Earth-observation satellite has helped identify two point sources of methane emissions in the US state of New Mexico as it passed the region, according to Zhang Yongguang, a professor at Nanjing University.

Based on a satellite image captured by the advanced hyperspectral images Gaofen 5B carried in February, the gradient of methane concentration in the two locations is estimated to be an enhancement of 25 parts per billion to 350 parts per billion higher than the background atmospheric methane concentration, he told China Daily on Wednesday.

With the help of images from other satellites and online company information, he concluded that the emissions are from a shale gas well belonging to EOG Resources and a compressor station of Matador Resources, both of which are energy companies.

Zhang pointed out the shale gas well as a super emission source that has "produced a large amount of methane leakage". The hourly emissions from it are about 7.3 to 16.1 metric tons, he said.

He said roughly 0.4 to 0.8 tons of methane is emitted per hour from the compressor station.

Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. During the first 20 years that methane is released into the atmosphere, it is 80 times more efficient in trapping heat than carbon dioxide.
