Apollo 14

Część pierwsza: opis i przygotowania do misji.

Statek minął by Ziemię w sporej odległości.

"Podejście do lądowania - nieoczekiwane problemy
Nim załoga dotarła do punktu PID kontrola naziemna zauważyła dosyć poważny problem.

Problem ten został dość dobrze rozwiązany podczas misji Apollo - poza misją Apollo 14, kiedy to astronauci dostali relatywnie dużą dawkę promieniowania (ponad 1 rad), wszystkie inne misje przedostały się w obie strony praktycznie bez narażania astronautów.

These fragments were of a compound known as zircon, a type of silicate mineral that contains trace amounts of radioactive elements (like uranium, thorium, and lutetium). As Kevin McKeegan, a UCLA professor of geochemistry and cosmochemistry and a co-author of the study, explained, “Zircons are nature’s best clocks. They are the best mineral in preserving geological history and revealing where they originated.”

By examining the radioactive decay of these elements, and correcting for cosmic ray exposure, the research team was able to get highly precise estimates of the zircon fragments ages. Using one of UCLA’s mass spectrometers, they were able to measure the rate at which the deposits of uranium in the zircon turned into lead, and the deposits of lutetium turned into hafnium.

In the end, their data indicated that the Moon formed about 4.51 billion years ago, which places its birth within the first 60 million years of the Solar System or so. Previously, dating Moon rocks proved difficult, mainly because most of them contained fragments of many different kinds of rocks, and these samples were determined to be tainted by the effects of multiple impacts.

Sporo drzew sadzonych z księżycowych nasion w latach 70. XX w. zostało  już zapomnianych lub wymarło.

Moon trees planted from seeds taken to the moon on Apollo 14 are dead and forgotten

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  — Five trees planted in New Mexico from seeds taken to the moon during the Apollo 14 mission and given to the state by NASA have all died or been forgotten, according to officials at the locations where the trees were planted decades ago.

Officials at New Mexico sites where the trees were planted decades ago admit their agencies since have lost track of the trees and some of them likely died with little notice, KOAT-TV in Albuquerque reports.

Moon trees were grown from 500 seeds taken into orbit by former U.S. Forest Service elite parachuting forest firefighter Stuart Roosa during the 1971 mission. Roosa and the seeds orbited more than two dozen times around the moon.

NASA said the seedlings were planted throughout the U.S. and elsewhere around the world after Apollo 14 returned to Earth. The trees were meant to honor Durango, Colorado-born Roosa, who died in 1994.

Five of the trees that grew from the seeds, which included American sycamores and Douglas Firs, were given to then-New Mexico Democratic Gov. Jerry Apodoca.

They were planted at the State Capitol in Santa Fe, the Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, the New Mexico Space Museum in Alamogordo, Gough Park in Silver City and Albuquerque's Civic Plaza, according to newspaper archives.

The tree planting events in the mid- to late-1970s generated fanfare and intense media coverage.

"We are not sure exactly where it was but it had to have been in this particular area right here," said Mike Shinabery, an education specialist at the New Mexico Space History Museum in Alamogordo, New Mexico, told a reporter.

"I am assuming that they may have planted it out here," said Bennie Long, director of Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, New Mexico, as she pointed to an old abandoned train depot. "Now that is just my guess."

Raphael Drhett Baca, building superintendent of the New Mexico State Capitol, said officials there have no idea where the moon tree was planted.

Albuquerque officials said that the moon tree planted in Civic Plaza later died after the plaza was remodeled in 1996.

Other states, like Arkansas, Florida and Georgia, have kept up with moon trees and periodically organize events around them.

50 lat temu 6 sierpnia 1969 poznaliśmy składy załóg Apollo 13 i Apollo 14.

50 Years Ago: NASA Names Apollo 13 and 14 Crews
Aug. 6, 2019

The Apollo 14 crew of (left to right) Shepard, Roosa, and Mitchell.

On August 6, 1969, NASA formally announced the crews for Apollo 13 and 14, the third and fourth Moon landing missions. At the time of the announcement, Apollo 13 was planned to launch in March 1970 and to land at the Fra Mauro region in the lunar highlands, the first landing site not in the relatively flat lunar maria. Apollo 14 was targeting a July 1970 mission with the Crater Censorinus area in the lunar highlands to the southeast of Mare Tranquilitatis as a tentative landing site. Plans for both missions called for two lunar surface excursions totaling about six hours with a lunar stay duration of 35 hours. As on Apollo 12, the crews planned to deploy the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package (ALSEP), a suite of science instruments, in addition to conducting the geology field work of documenting and collecting rock and soil samples for return to scientists on Earth for analysis. (...)

Commander Alan B. Shepard, CMP Stuart A. Roosa, and LMP Edgar D. Mitchell were designated as the prime crew for Apollo 14. Shepard, the first American in space when he launched aboard Mercury-Redstone 3 in May 1961, was recently returned to flight status after a surgical intervention cured his Ménière’s disease, an inner ear disorder. Both Roosa and Mitchell were rookies. The backup crew consisted of Commander Eugene A. Cernan, CMP Ronald E. Evans, and LMP Joe H. Engle. Cernan had flown in space twice before, on Gemini 9 and more recently as the LMP on Apollo 10. Evans and Engle were NASA spaceflight rookies, although Engle earned astronaut wings as a pilot with the US Air Force flying the X-15 rocket plane above the 50-mile altitude required to qualify as an astronaut on three of his 16 flights. 50 Years Ago: Apollo 13 Launch Date Reset
Jan. 13, 2020

(...) As part of the rescheduling of Moon missions, NASA delayed the launch of the next flight, Apollo 14, from July to October 1970. The Command and Service Module (CSM) and the Lunar Module (LM) had arrived at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) late in 1969 and technicians conducted tests on the vehicles in the Manned Spacecraft Operations Building (MSOB). On Jan. 12, workers lowered the ascent stage of the LM onto the CSM to perform a docking test – the next time the two vehicles would dock they would be on the way to the Moon and the test verified that they were compatible. Workers mated the two stages of the LM on Jan. 20. The three stages of the Apollo 14 Saturn V arrived in KSC’s cavernous Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) in mid-January and while workers stacked the first stage on its Mobile Launch Platform on Jan. 14, they delayed stacking the remainder of the rocket stages until May 1970. That decision proved fortunate, since engineers needed to modify the second stage engines following the pogo oscillations experienced during the Apollo 13 launch. (...)

50 Years Ago: Apollo 13 Two Months from Launch
Feb. 11, 2020

(...)
With one lunar mission just two months away, NASA continued preparations for the following flight, Apollo 14, then scheduled for October 1970 with a landing targeted for the Littrow region of the Moon, an area scientists believed to be of volcanic origin. Apollo 14 astronauts Commander Alan B. Shepard, CMP Stuart A. Roosa, and LMP Edgar D. Mitchell and their backups Eugene A. Cernan, Ronald E. Evans, and Joe H. Engle spent much of their time learning spacecraft systems in the simulators. Accompanied by a team of geologists led by Richard H. “Dick” Jahns, Shepard, Mitchell, Cernan, and Engle participated in a geology expedition to the Pinacate Mountain Range in northern Mexico between Feb. 14 and 18, 1970. In addition to learning the volcanic geology at the site, the astronauts practiced using the Modular Equipment Transporter (MET), a two-wheeled conveyance nicknamed the “Rickshaw” to transport their tools and samples once on the lunar surface.
