While all eyes were trying to find that missing comsat, TZ-1 and TG-2 flew under the radar and completed their 2nd docking test earlier today.

The two spacecraft undocked at 01:37 UTC, afterward TZ-1 retreated to the 5 km holding point for 90 minutes, then made a flyaround to the front of TG-2. After the two spacecraft yawed 180 degrees back to heads on position, TZ-1 re-approached and re-docked at 06:55 UTC.

Seeds from an over 5,000-year-old cypress in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province have sprouted after being taken into space by Chinese astronauts in 2016, a research group have said.

“Twenty-eight seeds had sprouted by the end of May,’’ Zhao Xia, from the rare tree germ plasm resources group, said Monday.

According to Zhao, the seedlings are now between three to five cm tall.

The over 20-metre-tall cypress is located in Shaanxi’s Huangling County.

It is said to have been planted by Huangdi, the Yellow Emperor, who is regarded as the common ancestor for all Chinese.

“Some 150 seeds, collected in August 2016, were taken into space on the Shenzhou-11 mission and kept at the Tiangong-II lab from Sept. 15 to Nov. 18, 2016.

“The sprouting project began on May 15, and another 150 seeds that had not gone into space were germinated at the same time in a comparative study,’’ Zhao said.

Staff have monitored the sprouting process around the clock and taken records every two hours.

Według dostępnego rozkładu wiadomo jedynie, że do trzeciego i ostatniego połączenia z TG-2 ma dojść po 90 dniach samodzielnego lotu, zatem około 20 września. Potem jakiś czas (maksymalnie kilka tygodni) polatają razem, później (pewnie też kilka tygodni) samodzielnie. Podejrzewam, że do deorbitacji dojdzie gdzieś na przełomie października i listopada.

Space-exposed mango seeds planted in Zhanjiang

Recently returned mango seeds that spent 33 days orbiting the Earth on the Shenzhou 11 space mission are ready to be planted in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province.

It is hoped that the effects of radiation from outer space might result in improved variants of the tropical fruit.
Scientists at the South Subtropical Crops Research Institute will be tasked with planting the seeds and monitoring and recording their findings.

It is the first time spaceflight mutation on mangoes has been tested in China.

There is no guarantee that the mutations which have taken place on the seeds will result in improvements, with many similar cases returning negative results.

"Developing the seeds into seedlings will not be an easy task," said Zhan Rulin, deputy head of the institute.
Zhan said that nonetheless, space mutation is of great significance in developing new varieties of mangoes.
The mango seeds, exposed to radiation, various cabin pressures and weightlessness, have the ability to gain traits not capable by normal experiments.

The breeding program was jointly carried out by Hainan State Farms Agribusiness Group and the South Subtropical Crops Research Institute, subject to the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences.

China's first cargo spacecraft, Tianzhou-1, has successfully completed its third refuelling test with Tiangong-2, and undocked from the space lab ahead of de-orbiting.

Tianzhou-1 separated from Tiangong-2 at 16:15 Beijing time on Sunday (08:15 universal time), and is now orbiting at 120 metres behind the space lab.

Commands for the uncoupling were sent from the ground at 17:29, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

Co dalej z TG-2? Pojawiło się doniesienie, że jeśli przerwa w lotach CZ-5 potrwa dłużej, co spowoduje opóźnienie startu Tianhe-1, możliwe jest wysłanie SZ-12 z załogą do TG-2. Podejrzewam, że statek znajduje się już w takim stopniu montażu, że pewne jego elementy mają już włączony swój "zegar biologiczny". Zatem nie da się wykluczyć lotu SZ-12 już w roku 2018. Oczywiście to tylko przypuszczenie.
