50 Years Ago: Apollo 16 Rolls to the Launch Pad
Dec 16, 2021

(...) On Dec. 1, Mattingly practiced for his deep-space spacewalk in the Water Immersion Facility (WIF) at MSC’s Mission Training and Simulation Facility (Building 5). Wearing a pressure suit, Mattingly rehearsed retrieving film canisters using a mockup of the Command and Service Module and the SIM bay placed in the water tank. Roosa repeated the activity in the WIF on Jan. 7, 1972. (...)

Prezentacja super!

Dodatkowo warto podać link do pełnej informacji o starcie Apollo-16 50 lat temu.

It was hoped that this highland location would yield volcanic rocks and offer tantalizing insights into billions of years of the Moon’s evolution. So convinced were many in the geological community that Apollo 16 would find volcanic rocks at Descartes that most of the astronauts’ training was in volcanic regions on Earth.

The crew had an unlucky pedigree. Charlie Duke was the backup LMP for Apollo 13, but his infamous exposure to German measles led to a last-minute decision to ground Ken Mattingly from his spot as prime CMP on that crew. Mattingly was replaced by his own backup, Jack Swigert, and in March 1971 Young—as Apollo 13’s backup Commander—was assigned with the unfortunate duo to take Apollo 16 to the Moon. This led to a spot of banter on launch morning, 16 April 1972, particularly since the Apollo 16 backup Commander was Apollo 13 veteran Fred Haise.

Mój lapsus, oczywiście że w LM-11 „Orion” było dwóch astronautów z trójki lecącej w misji Apollo 16. :)

Apollo 16 astronaut looks to the future of space

50 years on, Apollo 16 moonwalker still 'excited' by space

Duke, 86, is one of four surviving moonwalkers from the Apollo program, taking Apollo 16 to the lunar surface in 1972. He has been making the rounds to mark the 50th anniversary of his voyage, recently taking a trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, to visit his spaceship, which made the next-to-the-last U.S. mission to land on the moon.

The late John Young was first out of the lander and walked on the moon with Duke. Ken Mattingly orbited the moon in the command module, nicknamed “Casper.” (...)

On Friday, Duke visited the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, which houses an exhibit full of some of his mementos from the moon, including a space suit, check list and moon rock. A series of placards describe the voyage and also include a flight drawing Duke made as a child on some of his arithmetic work.

Apr 29, 2022

On April 27, 1972, Apollo 16 astronauts John W. Young, Thomas K. “Ken” Mattingly, and Charles M. Duke successfully ended their 11-day Moon landing mission with a splashdown in their Command Module (CM) Casper in the Pacific Ocean. Recovery teams from the U.S.S. Ticonderoga (CVS-14) monitored the descent and landing and retrieved the astronauts and their spacecraft. Officials from NASA and the U.S. Navy greeted the astronauts as they stepped off the recovery helicopter. President Richard M. Nixon telephoned to congratulate them on their successful mission. They spent their first night on Earth aboard Ticonderoga before beginning the journey home to Houston. Workers removed toxic materials from Casper to make it safe for transport back to its manufacturer for postflight inspections (...)

Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke Returns To Paris Air Show 2023
By Armada International -April 19, 2023
Cytuj
A much-anticipated highlight of the 54th Paris Air Show this summer will be the return of Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot, Brigadier General Charlie Duke, USAF (Ret), as a goodwill ambassador of the USA Partnership Pavilion and the Astronaut Al Worden Endeavour Scholarship.

Duke will be joined by former French Astronaut-Cosmonaut Général de Brigade Jean-Loup Chretien, Armée de l’Air (Ret); former NASA astronaut, Col. Michael J. Bloomfield, USAF (Ret); and Endeavour program founder, USA Partnership Pavilion organizer Tom Kallman, to announce the host country’s first scholarship recipients of a week-long, hands-on astronaut training experience at Space Camp in Huntsville, AL later this summer.
