SpaceX is targeting Monday, October 19 for a Falcon 9 launch of the Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission to orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The one-hour window opens at 6:30 a.m. ET. If needed, there is a backup opportunity on Tuesday, October 20 with the same window.

This will be the 19th flight of the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Crew-9, RRT-1, Firefly Blue Ghost Mission 1, Fram2, SXM-10, MTG-S1, EchoStar XXV, SXM-11, and now 10 Starlink missions. Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the A Shortfall of Gravitas droneship which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

XXI wieku”.

Viasat prepares to demo commercial alternative to NASA’s TDRS
By paul brinkmann - October 5, 2026

California satellite operator Viasat is readying for the launch of a communications satellite that aims to demonstrate commercial spacecraft can take over the duties of NASA’s aging Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) network.

The Maxwell satellite, built and operated by Rocket Lab, is set for a journey into orbit on the upcoming SpaceX Bandwagon-5 launch from Florida, said Skylar Cox, chief technology officer of Viasat Space & Mission Systems, during a Payload Space webinar last week. SpaceX hasn’t yet announced a launch date.

The demonstration is part of NASA’s ongoing Communications Service Project (CSP) to eventually replace TDRS, the first of which began operations in 1983. NASA in late 2024 stopped using TDRS for new missions, but noted “current TDRS users, like the International Space Station, Hubble Space Telescope, and many other Earth- and universe-observing missions, will still rely on TDRS until the mid-2030s.”

With TDRS, mission controllers have experienced regular, if brief, communication dropouts as their spacecraft antennas switch from one satellite to another. The goal of CSP is to improve on that record by demonstrating continuous relay communications in low-Earth orbit, Cox said.

Viasat in 2022 received $53.3 million, one of several such awards NASA made under the project that year, totaling $278.5 million. Others with CSP contracts are Amazon’s Kuiper, SES Satellite, SpaceX and Telesat.

“We’ve been preparing for this for a long time,” Cox said of the Maxwell launch. “We’re in the last stretch here, so the team’s exhausted. But the vehicle is fully integrated on the launch vehicle, and we’re just kind of waiting now to turn it on and get it going.”

He continued: “With Maxwell, we’ll be demonstrating a kind of end-to-end service, so we’re moving away from these rigid, constrained windows of communication opportunities, and we’re starting to see this always-on, persistent communication emerge as an available option.”

NASA is also applying this strategy of partnering with commercial providers to establish communication networks around the moon and eventually Mars, rather than the agency owning and operating them, said Greg Heckler, deputy program manager of capability development for NASA’s SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) Program, during the webinar.

He noted NASA’s larger goal is to someday establish a unified “Solar System Internet.”

“TDRS was a workhorse for the agency for decades,” Heckler said, “but we made a decision in the agency several years ago to not build anymore, and so we needed to maintain what we call Earth relay capability for our science and human exploration missions.”

Other companies with CSP awards are progressing toward demonstrations. SpaceX’s award, for example, is for $69.95 million to connect its existing Starlink constellation and extensive ground system to spacecraft through optical links. NASA is equipping the Orion spacecraft for the upcoming Artemis III mission with two SpaceX Starlink mini laser terminals to demonstrate this capability.

A little luck and a lot of Grace go a long way (in this case, 250 miles up)!
Each crew’s zero-g indicator is unique. Ours, named Lucky, represents the golden dragon at the center of our Crew-13 patch, which honors the brave and resilient legacy of Apollo 13 on which we stand.
Thinking of Crew-12 today, whose indicator is beginning to drop right about now as they re-enter Earth’s gravity!

2) ‘An amazing ride’: SpaceX flight led by first Black female commander sets US speed record
Associated Press Fri 2 Oct 2026 05.18 CEST

(...) With the late-morning launch, Watkins became the first Black woman to lead a crew to orbit. A geologist who worked with Nasa’s Mars rover Curiosity a decade ago, Watkins is making her second trip to the space station after a lengthy stay in 2022.

“Thanks for an amazing ride,” Watkins radioed after liftoff. (...)

References to the number 13 abounded on Thursday. Watkins and her crew rode to the launch pad in black Teslas bearing plates that read “Lucky 13”. They also carried up a small crocheted golden dragon named Lucky with a four-leaf clover around its neck.

“We figured it wouldn’t hurt to bring a little of our own luck just in case, but clearly we don’t need it,” Watkins said from orbit, noting they were “four of the luckiest humans on or off planet Earth”. (...)

From DeBary to space: Florida-born NASA astronaut ready for launch to ISS
Rick Neale   Florida Today

(...) “It’s fantastic we’ve got an Osprey (heading to) space," Jack Hewitt, an astrophysicist who chairs UNF's physics department, said in a phone interview, referring the UNF graduate.

"I think Luke is going to be an inspiration to the current and future students at UNF, just being able to do this and showing what’s possible," said Hewitt, who previously worked at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

“There are a lot of students in engineering and physics and chemistry and biology and all the sciences that can end up working for NASA one day. And so, I really hope that inspires them to pursue that. And not just NASA, but also the thriving space start-up industry that we have going in Florida,” Hewitt said. (...)
