Entrepreneur and philanthropist Mark Pathy will conduct several experiments while visiting the ISSPathy's uniform is seen here. The entrepreneur will be only the second private Canadian citizen to travel to space. In 2009, Cirque de Soleil co-founder Guy Laliberté became the first Canadian space tourist. (SpaceX)Mark Pathy isn't the type for being in the spotlight but, being part of the historic first civilian mission to the space station, he hasn't had much choice.
"If I could have done this in complete anonymity, I definitely would have," he said. "But, obviously, that's not possible." (...)
It may seem like a fantastical and unnecessary goal to set up a space station, but the company's aim, it said, is to conduct research and experiments that can be used not only in space but also here on Earth.
And that was part of the appeal for Pathy to buy a $50-million seat.
"When I found out that we were able to select research to bring up with us and complete up there, that was just the icing on the cake — that I could really make this a lot more impactful." (...)

Eytan Meir StibbeAx-1 Mission Specialist Eytan StibbeFirst Israeli astronaut boards International Space StationBy Abigail Klein Leichman APRIL 10, 2022, 10:48 AM
Eytan Stibbe makes history for Israel, and for the world as he takes part in the first-ever fully private space mission.Stibbe is donating his time and all costs of the journey, including expenses related to the 44 experiments he’s taking along from Israeli scientists, entrepreneurs and students.
According to the Ramon Foundation, “The mission will enable Israeli entrepreneurs and researchers to advance innovative ideas and will provide a rare opportunity for them to test their enterprises in a unique study environment, thereby contributing to international and Israeli research industries. In addition, the mission will make diversified educational activities accessible, to benefit all Israeli children. It will in fact, be the first time that Israeli children and youth will have access to the International Space Station, in Hebrew.”

The experiments cover a wide variety of different fields of study, including testing or demonstrating the viability of certain technologies, observing scientific phenomena, studying mechanisms of theorized concepts and groundbreaking tests on food and agriculture.

(credit: Courtesy SpaceX)Also on board with Stibbe is a sculpture made by Tel Aviv University physicist Dr. Yasmine Meroz and artist Liat Segal. Dubbed the "Impossible Object," this water sculpture can only form in space amid the absence of gravity. The sculpture is made of brass pipes and rods that carry water. In zero gravity conditions, the water envelops the brass to form a 3D shape that resembles an endless staircase.
Ax-1 is the first fully private space mission headed by Houston-based start-up Axiom Space. The four took off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The crew are set to dock at the ISS on Saturday.
The mission was originally slated for a March 30 launch, but it was postponed twice to give more time to complete prelaunch processing work.
