Prawdziwy początek XXI wieku zastał kosmonautę na orbicie

New York City on September 11, 2001
Sept. 11, 2012

Visible from space, a smoke plume rises from the Manhattan area after two planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center. This photo was taken of metropolitan New York City (and other parts of New York as well as New Jersey) the morning of September 11, 2001. "Our prayers and thoughts go out to all the people there, and everywhere else," said Station Commander Frank Culbertson of Expedition 3, after the terrorists' attacks.

The following day, he posted a public letter that captured his initial thoughts of the events as they unfolded. "The world changed today. What I say or do is very minor compared to the significance of what happened to our country today when it was attacked."

Upon further reflection, Culbertson said, "It's horrible to see smoke pouring from wounds in your own country from such a fantastic vantage point. The dichotomy of being on a spacecraft dedicated to improving life on the earth and watching life being destroyed by such willful, terrible acts is jolting to the psyche, no matter who you are."

Golf swing outside space station follows moon, shuttle shots

Cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin prepares to hit a golf ball outside of the International Space Station. In his hand is a club provided by the Element 21 Golf Company, which paid for the demo. (NASA TV)

November 22, 2006 — One more, and we'll have enough for a foursome.

International Space Station flight engineer Mikhail Tyurin became the world's third space golfer this evening as he took swing with a six iron at the start of a scheduled six- hour spacewalk.

"There it goes! And it went pretty far... I can still see it as a little dot that is moving away from us," Tyurin said after making connection on his first swing. The shot came just short of 7:00 p.m. CST as the ISS orbited 220 miles high above the northwest Pacific Ocean.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=7&v=0dIPf5tDuLo&feature=emb_title
(NASA TV)

Tyurin's orbital drive, made from just outside the Russian Pirs docking compartment, was made possible through a partnership between the Russian Federal Space Agency and the Canadian golf company Element 21. The six iron is from E21's new line of scandium clubs, a sturdy metal alloy also used on segments of the ISS. Two gold-plated scandium clubs were launched to the station in Fall 2005 along with ultra-light golf balls equipped for tracking and a special tee resembling a spring.

A golf novice, Tyurin took lessons on the ground and had been practicing his one-handed swing inside the station before today's slice. Cameras outside the ISS, including one specifically set for the golf shot, caught the swing for E21, which plans to use the footage in a commercial.

The golf ball was hit in the opposite direction that the ISS is traveling to insure there was no chance of recontacting the station. NASA estimates the ball will remain in space for only two to three days before buring up during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, though the Russian's predict they could remain in orbit for more than three years.

According to E21, their "golf shot around the world" is in part a tribute to the 35th anniversary of the first astronaut golf shot by Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard.

Next Space Tourist To Get Two Extra Days Aboard ISS
By TARIQ MALIK  03 April 2007

NEW YORK — American software developer Charles Simonyi, the next paying tourist to visit the international space station (ISS), will get two extra days in orbit — at no additional cost — thanks to a tricky bit of orbital mechanics.

Instead of an 11-day trip to the ISS with two Russian cosmonauts, Simonyi is now gearing up for 13 days in orbit after station mission managers extended the flight to maintain a desired landing trajectory, NASA officials said.

Simonyi is training to launch towards the ISS April 7 with Expedition 15 commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and flight engineer Oleg Kotov, who will take control of the station from its current Expedition 14 crew . Their Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft is due to dock at the space station April 9.

“Normally, the docked operations are nine days,” said Rob Navias, a spokesman at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, adding that the two-day extension is designed so Simonyi and two Expedition 14 astronauts will touch down at their landing site in daylight April 20. “This is unusual in a sense that it is a little bit longer than usual docked ops, but it’s all designed to bring in the proper landing site.”

Simonyi is paying more than $20 million for his spaceflight under a deal brokered with Russia’s Federal Space Agency by the Virginia-based space tourism firm Space Adventures.

“To Dr. Simonyi’s benefit, he will have the additional days on the ISS at no extra cost,” said Space Adventures spokeswoman Erin Lundberg.

With the planned 13-day mission, Simonyi is expected to set a new record by racking up the most days in space ever for a private spaceflyer, Space Adventures officials said . Yurchikhin and Kotov, meanwhile, will settle in for a six-month stay aboard the ISS and join their third crew member, NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who is already aboard the station.

A native of Hungary and lifelong space enthusiast, Simonyi, 58, is the co-founder of Intentional Software Corp. and a former Microsoft software developer. He plans to participate in a series of biomedical experiments during his now 13-day spaceflight, and has kept a continuous log of his training activities via his Web site: www.charlesinspace.com.

Navias said Russian mission managers had to adjust their launch and landing plans for the Expedition 15-Simonyi flight due to the delay of NASA’s STS-117 mission. That flight was slated to lift off March 15 to deliver new solar arrays to the ISS, but a severe Feb. 26 hail storm damaged its external tank and pushed the mission’s launch to mid May at the earliest.

“When STS-117 was delayed, the whole phasing plan for Soyuz had to change as well,” Navias said, adding that the two-day mission extension is the first since NASA began returning astronauts to Earth aboard Soyuz spacecraft.

Russian mission managers originally planned to extend the docked mission one day — with a landing set for April 19 — when they chose the April 7 launch date. The measure would ensure that Simonyi and Expedition 14 astronauts Michael Lopez-Alegria and Mikhail Tyurin would touch down at their intended landing site before sunset.

The delay of NASA’s STS-117 mission, and the station’s successful orbital reboost March 16 , prompted an extra day in orbit for Simonyi in order to maintain that daylight landing, now set for April 20 at 7:30 p.m. local time on the steppes of Kazakhstan near the city of Arkalyk, Navias said.

Russian mission managers prefer daylight Soyuz landings to help recovery crews locate the spacecraft quickly in the event of an emergency, according to NASA officials.

During the additional two days of docked operations, the Expedition 14 and Expedition 15 astronauts plan to perform extra orbital training and familiarization tasks, as well as some other chores to ready the station for the arrival of NASA’s STS-117 shuttle crew, Navias said.

Simonyi will be the fifth space tourist to visit the ISS since the 2001 spaceflight of American businessman Dennis Tito. South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth flew to the ISS in 2002, followed by Americans Greg Olsen, in 2005, and Anousheh Ansari in 2006.
