July 2, 2012 — Former astronaut Alan "Dex" Poindexter, 50, a space shuttle commander who flew twice into space, died Sunday (July 1) after being injured in a water sports accident in Florida, NASA confirmed.

"The NASA family was sad to learn of the passing of our former friend, and colleague Alan Poindexter who was killed today during a jet ski accident in Florida," the space agency wrote on Facebook late on Sunday evening. "Our thought and hearts are with his family."

According to local media reports citing the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC), Poindexter was jet skiing with his sons on Little Sabine Bay near Pensacola Beach, Fla., when the accident occurred.

"Poindexter and his 21-year-old son were on one jet ski and his oldest son was on another jet ski. Poindexter was sitting still in the water when his [older] son's jet ski came barreling into him," the local ABC affiliate WEAR reported, citing the FWC, which investigates boating accidents.

Poindexter was rushed to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, where he later died from his injuries. (...)

Alan G. Poindexter (Credits: NASA)

W 1986 roku zdobył licencjat z inżynierii lotniczej i kosmicznej w Georgia Institute of Technology, po czym wstąpił do lotnictwa amerykańskiej marynarki wojennej. Stopień magistra inżyniera (Master of Science) uzyskał w 1995 w Naval Postgraduate School w Monterey, Kalifornia.

Na astronautę został wybrany w czerwcu 1998 roku (grupa 17, zwana „The Penguins”).

Alan Poindexter zakończył karierę w NASA w grudniu 2010 roku z nalotem wynoszącym łącznie: 27 dni 21 godzin 8 minut i 47 sekund. Po opuszczeniu korpusu astronautów powrócił do służby w US Navy. Wylatał ponad 4000 godzin na przeszło 30 typach samolotów. 450 razy lądował na pokładzie lotniskowca.

Alan Poindexter opuszcza korpus astronautów
BY MICHAŁ MOROZ ON 12 GRUDNIA 2010

Alan Poindexter / credits: NASA, JSC

Alan Poindexter, weteran dwóch lotów wahadłowcem Atlantis, opuścił korpus amerykańskich astronautów. Jednocześnie rozpocznie pracę w Podyplomowej Szkole Marynarki Wojennej w kalifornijskim Monterey, gdzie zostanie dziekanem ds. studentów oraz będzie nadzorował programy nauczania.

Poindextera wybrano do korpusu w 1998 roku.

Liftoff from Kennedy Space Center's launch pad 39A occurred at 2:45 p.m. (EST). The launch is the third attempt for Atlantis since December 2007 to carry the European Space Agency's (ESA) Columbus laboratory to the station. During the 11-day mission, the crew's prime objective is to attach the laboratory to the Harmony module, adding to the station's size and capabilities. Onboard are astronauts Steve Frick, commander; Alan Poindexter, pilot; Leland Melvin, Rex Walheim, ESA's Hans Schlegel, Stanley Love and ESA's Leopold Eyharts, all mission specialists.
