🇬🇧 Axiom Mission 3 is the first commercial mission to the International Space Station in which a European astronaut takes part, and it is Marcus Wandt from Sweden.
Astronauts from 3 other countries also take part in this mission: Alter from Turkey, Walter from Italy, and the mission commander is retired NASA astronaut Mike, who holds dual Spanish and American citizenship.

I can tell you more about the program from the perspective of Marcus' mission. It primarily has scientific and technological objectives, but also an educational aspect.

🔬 One of the experiments Marcus will conduct is called Bone Health. Its goal is to examine how the bone structure of astronauts changes in microgravity during short-term space missions. Such research and diagnosis could contribute, for example, to better osteoporosis diagnostics.

Another experiment is called Orbital Architecture, which investigates astronauts' perception and cognitive abilities in challenging conditions: under time pressure, in zero gravity, under great stress, and heavy workload. Interestingly, one Polish company involved in brain imaging and collaborating with the European Space Agency and the Polish Space Agency is also participating in this experiment.

There are about 30 scientific experiments that astronauts will conduct during the AX-3 mission. Let me know if you want to learn more about other experiments 👋🏻

🇬🇧 Axiom missions to the International Space Station are short-term space missions, typically lasting several weeks. Axiom 3 mission was launched on January 18th, and the capsule will return to Earth landing in the Atlantic Ocean on February 9th, which makes 22 days from launch to landing, of which 20 days being docked to the space station.

The flight time for Marcus, from takeoff to docking, took 36 hours. So, the time is quite long. It depends on the alignment of the space station in orbit with Cape Canaveral at the time of launch.

🧑‍🚀 The first two days of the mission are primarily focused on adapting to the new conditions, training for various safety scenarios, and preparing for the scientific and technological part of the mission.

After those two days, the main part of the mission begins, during which all experiments are carried out.

The last two days are for preparations for the return, that is moving various experiments into the capsule, safely arranging the load, and checking all systems and spacesuits for the return to Earth.

Which rocket will carry the Dragon to the space station? 🚀

Let's start from the beginning. The only possibility for us, for European astronauts, is to fly into space with the SpaceX rocket and capsule from Cape Canaveral.

A capsule is the part that is placed at the very top of the rocket, and there the crew is located. This is the SpaceX capsule that flies to the 🛰 International Space Station. It's called Dragon.

There are two versions of this capsule: the crewed one or the second, which delivers cargo. The design of both capsules is so similar that SpaceX sometimes claims that crewed and cargo missions are practically the same from their perspective.

We have the capsule here, and underneath it there is the rocket that carries the capsule to low Earth orbit, where only the crewed capsule is docking to the station.

Now: the rocket is called Falcon 9 and consists of two parts. The first part, the lower one, allows it to pass through the lower layers of the atmosphere, and this part is later detached and lands back on Earth. The second part of the rocket, the upper one, is responsible for the higher part of the flight, it is then burned up in the atmosphere and thus not reused 🔥

❓ What happens when one of the astronauts’ health suddenly deteriorates? This is a very important question, and of course, various accidents can happen.

The most important thing is that astronauts are to be prepared for all possible situations.

Let's start with the fact that each astronaut undergoes very thorough medical examinations, which I also had to undergo, and this definitely minimizes the risk of sudden illness in orbit 🛰

The space station itself is very well-equipped with medical devices, and astronauts are very well-trained in providing first aid. During my training, I also had to learn how to collect my blood and apply stitches 💉🩸

Moreover, some of the astronauts have medical training and extensive experience in hospitals, which also minimizes the risk during such missions.

Importantly, each astronaut is monitored by a dedicated doctor on Earth 🩺 During my training, I also have my own doctor who monitors my health state on Earth.

However, if a medical emergency were to occur, it is always possible to return to Earth, but then the entire crew will have to return. So such an astronaut is transported back to Earth and then from the Atlantic is taken by a helicopter directly to the hospital 🏥

As far as I know, such a case has never occurred, and I hope it never will 🤞🏻

Co obecnie najbardziej interesuje Pana w tej dziedzinie?

Ze strony technologicznej interesuje mnie to, jak działa stacja kosmiczna, jak działa rakieta, jak działa kapsuła. W mojej karierze projektowałem wiele satelitów, recenzowałem wiele projektów satelitów, przede wszystkim ze strony polskiej, które zostały wyniesione na orbitę albo zostaną wyniesione na orbitę. Także tę część technologiczną znam dosyć dobrze. Ogromną fascynacją jest dla mnie eksploracja kosmosu. Sam czuje się jako podróżnik, jako eksplorator. Lubię chodzić po górach. Lubię chodzić w nieznane. Taka podróż kosmiczna czy misja np. na Międzynarodowej Stacji Kosmicznej to chyba najdalsza przygoda, której mógłbym doświadczyć.

The reason for such quarantine is quite similar to the quarantine we all went through during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's aimed at ensuring that astronauts don't get sick at the last moment and bring their bacteria or viruses to the space station, potentially infecting the crew that is already there, or their fellow astronauts 🧑‍🚀
Quarantine typically lasts for two weeks, after which it's assumed that the incubation period for most diseases has passed 🧫
👉🏻 An interesting fact: during quarantine, only a partner can join the astronaut, but their children cannot. This is due to minimizing the risk of transmitting diseases. So, that's how it works.

(...) Mam nadzieję, że to raczej perspektywa miesięcy niż lat – przyznaje. – Loty w kosmos są dość trudne. Zobaczymy, co nas czeka. Gdy informacja dotrze do mnie – dotrze też do was – zapowiada. (...)

W najbliższych dniach Sławosz Uznański będzie miał możliwość rejsu specjalnym samolotem, odbędzie lot paraboliczny. Polega on na tym, że maszyna porusza się trajektorią paraboliczną – szybko się wznosi, a potem zaczyna nurkować i symuluje stan spadku swobodnego, co dla pasażerów objawia się wrażeniem nieważkości. – Trwa to od kilku do kilkunastu sekund. Doświadczę tego pierwszy raz. Trochę się tego obawiam, ale z drugiej strony jestem podekscytowany i ciekawy tego, jak będę to przechodził – przyznaje. (...)

Sławosz Uznański nie liczy na moc wolnego czasu w kosmicznych przestworzach. Przyznaje, że grafik astronauty jest szczegółowo zaplanowany, wszystkie zadania są rozpisane. – Czas astronauty na orbicie jest niesamowicie cenny. Jeśli znajdę pół godzinki wolnego to chyba polecę do Cupoli – naszego okna na Ziemię, by pooglądać, jak nasza planeta wygląda z kosmosu. Mam nadzieję zobaczyć Polskę i może zrobić jakieś zdjęcie. In the week we celebrate #DarkMatterDay, listen to CERN engineer Slawosz Uznanski explain the experiment known as the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) that looks for #DarkMatter, antimatter, and missing matter from a detector module on the @Space_Station.
