Galileo flies past the Jovian volcanic moon Io (I-31) at 194 km OTD in 2001. Camera problems prevented visible HR imaging but the near IR spectrometer discovered a previously unknown volcano, just 600km from the Tvashtar volcano, was spewing a grand plume as Galileo passed.
30 years ago today, NASA's Galileo spacecraft flew by asteroid 243 Ida and captured this image, leading to the discovery of its moon, Dactyl.
