Kadr ze startu Falcona 9 z Telstarem 18 Vantage / SpaceXPo miesięcznej przerwie firma SpaceX przeprowadziła kolejny lot rakiety Falcon 9. Udało się wprowadzić ładunek na orbitę oraz wylądować pierwszym stopniem rakiety.
Start Falcona 9 w finalnej konfiguracji znanej jako Block 5, rozpoczął się o godzinie 6:45 CEST z Cape Canaveral. Głównym ładunkiem był satelita telekomunikacyjny Telstar 18 Vantage wyniesiony dla operatora Telesat. Ładunek trafił na orbitę transferową geostacjonarną. Warto podkreślić, że z masą 7060 kg jest to jeden z cięższych satelitów wyniesionych na orbitę GTO przez rakietę Falcon 9. Odzyskano również pierwszy stopień rakiety, który wylądował na barce Of Course I Still Love You.
Satelita zastąpi wysłużonego już Telstara 18, wystrzelonego w 2004 roku przy pomocy rakiety Zenit. Będzie on świadczył usługi telekomunikacyjne dla regionu Azji i Pacyfiku. Głównym odbiorcą danych nowego satelity będzie operator APT Satellite z Hong Kongu. Telstar 18 Vantage został zbudowany przez Space Systems Loral.
Jest to już drugi satelita wynoszony przez SpaceX dla spółki Telesat w ciągu dwóch miesięcy. W lipcu wystrzelono Telstara 19 Vantage.
Do końca roku SpaceX przeprowadzi jeszcze kilka ciekawych misji. Przede wszystkim wystrzelony ma zostać pierwszy egzemplarz nowej wersji kapsuły Dragon (w trybie bezzałogowym), który przetestuje systemy pojazdu w locie. Wyniesiony ma zostać również pierwszy satelita serii GPS 3 i być może uda się jeszcze przeprowadzić drugi lot Falcona Heavy – największej obecnie latającej rakiety nośnej.

Credit: Stephen Clark/Spaceflight Now(...) “We have an embedded base that’s on Telstar 18 today that will migrate over to Telstar 18 VANTAGE,” said Tom Eaton, Telesat’s vice president of international sales, in a pre-launch interview. “So there’s an element of continuity of service at play here by replacing the existing satellite, but Telstar 18 VANTAGE, since it’s the third of our high-throughput satellites, carries a lot more flexibility, switchability in its coverages, and then has high-throughput capability as well.”
Carrying a combination of broad regional beams and high-bandwidth spot beams, the satellite’s coverage area will span from India and Pakistan in the west, to Hawaii in the east.
APT Satellite — also known as APSTAR — of Hong Kong will use 57.5 percent of the satellite’s communications capacity, in exchange for funding 57.5 percent of the mission’s total cost.
“Through (the) APSTAR 5C Satellite, we will be able to maintain reliable services to our existing customers of APSTAR 5 satellite, and to assure the continuity of their businesses,” said Cheng Guangren, executive officer and president of APT Satellite, in a statement at the time of the satellite’s procurement in 2015. “Meanwhile, (the) APSTAR 5C satellite will carry more transponders, expand to broader service areas, and include regional high-throughput (HTS) capacities to satisfy growing market demand in Asia-Pacific region.”
