One of the funny little things I noticed after having lived in space for a while is that, contrary to everyday experience on Earth, it took some effort to keep my arms pressed against my body. Had I remembered better my childhood reading, I wouldn’t have been surprised. Jules Verne imagined this back in 1865. At one point, the protagonists of his From the Earth to the Moon realise that “their bodies were absolutely without weight. Their arms, full extended, no longer sought their sides.” (...)

Incredible detail and great writing. I do take exception with the title, however. Because when I arrived on ISS, Samantha was far from an apprentice astronaut. Well done.

N° 6–2021: Samantha Cristoforetti will fly to the International Space Station in 2022
3 March 2021

(...) “It gives me great pleasure to announce Samantha’s second space mission today,” says ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher. “Samantha is an excellent role model for anyone applying to ESA’s recently announced 2021/22 astronaut selection. I look forward to her continuing the essential work of European scientists in orbit as she inspires all Europeans to explore farther and reach higher for the benefit of Earth.” (...)

During ESA’s Space19+ ministerial council, Member States supported the Agency’s continued commitment to the International Space Station until at least 2030 and the provision of second flights for all astronauts from ESA’s class of 2009.

Samantha’s flight follows the second flights of her classmates Alexander Gerst in 2018, Luca Parmitano in 2019 and Thomas Pesquet in 2021, and could see a direct on-Station handover with Matthias Maurer who is scheduled to fly his first mission to the Space Station later this year.

ISS: Astronaut Cristoforetti readies to return 'home'

(...) For Cristoforetti, it will be a return to her "home away from home," as she likes to call the ISS. The Italian astronaut has indeed already spent a remarkable amount of time in orbit. From fall 2014 to spring 2015, she was at the station for 200 days working as flight engineer for the mission Futura, the second-longest period spent in space by an ESA astronaut. Her colleague and astronaut classmate Luca Parmitano is the only one to have topped that record — by just a single day. (...)

It still has to be decided which spacecraft will take Cristoforetti: Space-X's Dragon or Boeing's Starliner. The exact date for her flight has also not been confirmed yet. (...)
