Ten years ago today, I launched on my fourth and final mission to space. It was a heck of a ride, and I’ll always be grateful for the amazing people at NASA who supported me along the way.

Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer Hits Ten Years of Space Station Research
May 19, 2021

(...) During its lifetime, AMS-02 has collected data from more than 175 billion cosmic ray events. AMS Project Manager for NASA Ken Bollweg says data collected by AMS-02 is rigorously filtered, keeping less than one of 1,000 events initially recorded. As cosmic rays enter AMS-02, not all of them travel through each of the instrument’s nine unique detectors. If a cosmic particle fails to be measured by all nine detectors, its data is not stored. 1966 May 30 - . 14:41 GMT - . Launch Site: Cape Canaveral. Launch Complex: Cape Canaveral LC36A. LV Family: Atlas. Launch Vehicle: Atlas Centaur D.

Surveyor 1 - . Payload: Surveyor SC-1. Mass: 269 kg (593 lb). Nation: USA. Agency: JPL, NASA. Class: Moon. Type: Lunar probe. Spacecraft: Surveyor. Decay Date: 1966-06-02 . USAF Sat Cat: 2185 . COSPAR: 1966-045A.

The first operational Atlas/Centaur (AC-10) carried the NASA Surveyor I spacecraft to the moon in a direct ascent lunar transfer trajectory. This was the first in a series of seven Surveyors designed to develop soft-landing technology and to provide basic scientific and engineering data in support of Project Apollo. On 2 June, Surveyor I became the first U.S. spacecraft to soft-land on the moon and transmit television pictures Surveyor 1 soft landed on the moon in the Ocean of Storms and began transmitting the first of more than 11,150 clear, detailed television pictures to Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Deep Space Facility, Goldstone, Calif. The landing sequence began 3,200 kilometers above the moon with the spacecraft traveling at a speed of 9,700 kilometers per hour. The spacecraft was successfully slowed to 5.6 kilometers per hour by the time it reached 4-meter altitude and then free-fell to the surface at 13 kilometers per hour. The landing was so precise that the three footpads touched the surface within 19 milliseconds of each other, and it confirmed that the lunar surface could support the LM. It was the first U.S. attempt to soft land on the moon.

Fifty Years of Moon Dust: Surveyor 1 was a Pathfinder for Apollo

“We figured the probability of success at around 10 to 15 percent,” Rennilson said. “We had a lot of problems, not only on the spacecraft but also at JPL. The lab, which managed the Surveyor program for NASA, had just recently finished a new space flight operations facility, the SFOF. This had a telemetry connection with Goldstone, a tracking station in the California desert (now part of NASA's Deep Space Network) that would be accommodating the communication needs of the spacecraft during landing. But there were signal dropouts. They didn’t know what to do, so they sent me to Goldstone.” He arrived at the tracking station just prior to the landing on June 2.

55 Years Ago: Surveyor 1 Makes A Soft Landing on the Moon
Jun 2, 2021

(...) The 2,200-pound Surveyor 1 spacecraft launched atop an Atlas-Centaur rocket on May 30, 1966, from the Cape Kennedy Air Force Station, now the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. After a 63.6-hour coast from Earth, the spacecraft made a soft-landing on the Moon on June 2 inside the 60-mile wide Flamsteed P crater in the Ocean of Storms, bouncing once before settling on the surface. Tracking indicated that it had landed only nine miles from its target point. At landing, after using fuel for the descent and jettisoning its retrorocket, Surveyor 1 weighed only 648 pounds. Surveyor 1 carried a television camera used to return images from the surface with resolution down to one millimeter at a distance of four meters. (...)

50 Years Ago: Mariner 9 Launches to Orbit Mars
Jun 1, 2021

1) Liftoff of Mariner 8.
2) Launch of Mariner 9.

Following the successes of the Mariner 6 and 7 fly-bys of Mars in 1969, NASA’s next goal in Martian exploration involved placing spacecraft into orbit around the Red Planet. The Mariner-Mars 1971 project, managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, planned to insert two spacecraft, Mariner 8 and 9, equipped with cameras and other instruments, into elliptical orbits around Mars to study the planet for a minimum of 90 days. The two spacecraft had complementary but overlapping missions, with one mapping up to 70% of the planet’s surface while the second focused on recording temporal changes in the planet’s atmosphere and on its surface. Following Mariner 8’s launch failure, Mariner 9 picked up the combined objectives of both spacecraft. Mariner 9 launched successfully on May 30, 1971, and entered orbit around Mars on Nov. 13, 1971. (...)

The first, an orbiter, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on May 10 but failed to leave Earth orbit and the Soviets called it Kosmos 419 to hide its true identity. Mars 2 and 3, combined orbiter and lander spacecraft, launched on May 19 and 28, respectively, successfully left Earth orbit, and began their interplanetary journeys. Mars 2 reached its destination on Nov. 27, 1971, and released its lander which entered the Martian atmosphere at too steep an angle and crashed on the surface, the first spacecraft to reach the surface of Mars. Meanwhile the orbiter entered an elliptical orbit around Mars. Mars 3 arrived on Dec. 2, 1971, and released its lander that made the first soft-landing on Mars in the Ptolamaeus Crater. However, the lander stopped transmitting after only 20 seconds and did not return any useable data and could not deploy its PrOP-M rover. (...)

55 lat temu 29 maja 1966 roku w wyniku uderzenia w powierzchnię Srebrnego Globu nastąpiło zakończenie pracy pierwszego orbitera Księżyca Łuny-10.
