Rakietowy czwartek (29.03.2018)
BY KRZYSZTOF KANAWKA ON 30 MARCA 2018

W czwartek 29 marca doszło do startu trzech rakiet orbitalnych: indyjskiej, rosyjskiej i chińskiej.

GSLV Mk2 z GSat-6A

India tests upgraded engine tech in successful communications satellite launch
March 29, 2018 Stephen Clark

India’s GSLV Mk.2 rocket takes off Thursday with the GSAT 6A communications satellite. Credit: ISRO

(...)India’s next space mission is set for launch April 12, when a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle will loft the country’s ninth navigation satellite from a different launch pad at Sriharikota. If workers at the spaceport keep the PSLV mission on track, it will mark the shortest time between two Indian space launches.(...)

The success of GSLV F08 was also extremely welcome news to India’s research community since GSLV is set to launch the Chandrayaan-2 lunar research mission in October of this year that attempts to place an instrumented orbiter into a low orbit around the Moon and land a science platform and small rover on the lunar surface. The $125 million Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft is the first flagship mission launching on the GSLV and was contingent on the launcher proving its reliability via successful launches in 2016-18.

Built on ISRO’s I-2K platform, GSAT-6A hosts an 0.8-meter C-Band antenna carrying communications between the satellite and ground hub stations in India while communications to & from mobile terminals are handled through S-Band with the help of a six-meter unfurlable antenna reflector – the largest of its kind flown by India to date. Five 2.7 MHz S x C-Band transponders are responsible for the terminal-to-hub link while five 9 MHz C x S-Band transponders carry communications from the hub station to deployed terminals.

GSAT-6A is expected to join its nearly identical sister craft at an orbital position of 83 degrees East in Geostationary Orbit, doubling the available S-Band capacity by adding another five downlink spot beams. The satellite also provides continuity of services into the second half of the 2020s via its planned ten-year operational life. (...)

Soyuz-2-1v launches a military payload

(...) The Russian Ministry of Defense did not provide details on the payload carried during the fourth launch of the Soyuz-2-1v rocket but a careful review of open sources made by Bart Hendrickx, a historian of the Russian space flight, had established a strong link between the mission and the Experimental Small Spacecraft program, EMKA, developed at the Moscow-based VNIIEM corporation. In 2016, the organization disclosed in its annual report that it had been working on a remote-sensing complex based on the EMKA spacecraft, which stands for "Eksperementalny Maly Kosmichesky Apparat." Mysterious Russian reconnaissance satellite successfully launched
April 2, 2018 Stephen Clark

(...) U.S. military tracking data indicated the Kosmos 2525 satellite was circling Earth in a polar orbit an altitude of less than 200 miles, or about 315 kilometers, following Thursday’s launch.

Thursday’s launch was the fourth flight of Russia’s Soyuz 2-1v booster, which uses a single liquid-fueled NK-33 first stage engine originally developed for the Soviet-era N1 moon rocket. The Soyuz 2-1v replaces the Soyuz rocket’s four-nozzle core stage engine with a single-nozzle NK-33, and designers removed the four strap-on boosters that normally fly on Soyuz missions. (...)

Rare Soyuz 2-1v Rocket Launch Lifts Clandestine EMKA “Experimental Small Satellite”

File Image of a Soyuz 2-1v Rocket blasting off from Plesetsk – Credit: Russian MOD

(...) The satellite launched on Thursday was named Kosmos 2525 under Russia’s naming convention for military-operated missions. Some information on the satellite’s identity may come through the official launch announcement expected later on Thursday and its operational orbit and potential maneuvers will be revealed through orbital data collected by U.S. Space Surveillance over the coming days and weeks.

Thursday’s launch was only the fourth in the career of the Soyuz 2-1v rocket – a highly modified single-stick version of the Soyuz workhorse intended to provide light-to-medium lift capacity by combining many flight-proven technologies from different launcher families. The vehicle is the first flying under the Soyuz designation and not using the iconic R7-based design with four boosters around a central core – an architecture that has been in operation since 1957. China sends twin satellites into space with a single carrier rocket, adding two more members for its domestic BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), in Xichang of southwest China's Sichuan Province, on March 30, 2018. (Xinhua/Liang Keyan)

XICHANG, Sichuan, March 30 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday sent twin satellites into space with a single carrier rocket, adding two more members for its domestic BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS).

The Long March-3B carrier rocket lifted off from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 1:56 a.m. The launch was the 269th mission for the Long March rocket family.

The twin satellites are coded as the 30th and 31st satellites in the BDS.

They entered orbit more than three hours after the launch and will work together with six previously launched BeiDou-3 satellites once they pass a series of tests.

The satellites and the rocket for Friday's launch were developed by the Innovation Academy for Microsatellites at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, respectively.

Named after the Chinese term for the Big Dipper, the BeiDou system started providing independent services over China in 2000 and will serve countries along the Belt and Road by the end of 2018.

By around 2020, when the BDS goes global, it will have more than 30 satellites.

Long March 3B Thunders off from China with Beidou Navigation Satellite Pair
 March 29, 2018

China launched a Long March 3B rocket on Thursday, carrying the next pair of Beidou-3 navigation satellites to join the country’s growing Global Navigation Satellite System set to reach operational strength later this year. Out of nine orbital space launches carried out so far this year by the Chinese, three were in support of Beidou-3 – showcasing the drive behind getting the system into service with up to 18 Beidou craft headed up the hill in 2018.

Thursday’s launch from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the Sichuan Province occurred at 17:56 UTC, 1:56 a.m. local time and marked the start of a four-hour ascent mission comprising a climb into a preliminary orbit by the three-stage CZ-3B rocket followed by two burns of the YZ-1 upper stage to dispatch the Beidou-3 MEO-5 and MEO-6 satellites directly into their operational orbit 21,500 Kilometers above the planet. Liftoff was confirmed through local observers present for the launch and an official acknowledgement is expected to come once the satellites have arrived in their target orbit later on Thursday.

China remains at pace with the United States so far this year with Thursday’s launch marking the country’s ninth orbital space launch in 2018, taking them one ahead of the U.S. – but only for 20 hours as a Falcon 9 gears up for liftoff from California on Friday carrying the fifth set of Iridium-NEXT satellites. 2018 is expected to become China’s busiest space flight year to date and one particular item of focus is the country’s Beidou navigation constellation that has been available as a regional navigation system since 2009 and is now being expanded to full global coverage.
