WASHINGTON — The head of NASA’s science directorate confirmed June 10 that the James Webb Space Telescope will miss its March 2021 launch date, a slip that was all but inevitable as the coronavirus pandemic slowed work on the spacecraft. (...)

NASA hasn’t set a new launch date yet for JWST. “What we need to do is learn the new efficiency” of working in current conditions, Zurbuchen said. “We need to calibrate that through a schedule review and go forward.” A schedule assessment, he said, was planned for July.

He remained hopeful that JWST will still launch some time in 2021 on an Ariane 5 from French Guiana. “I’m very optimistic of this thing getting off the launch pad in ’21.” (...)

Zawsze przecież mają w zanadrzu kolejne 10 lat Well...THIS IS NASA.

Dobra, w tym przypadku nie ma bezpośredniej winy NASA. Pandemia wiele rzeczy w pracach nad hardware zatrzymała i spowolniła. A USA dostała jednak mocno.

tzn. to zrozumiałe, że to konkretnie opóźnienie spowodowane jest w głównej mierze COVID'em, ale moja kąśliwa uwaga dotyczyła sytuacji, w której jest szansa, że w kosmos wystrzelony zostanie hardware zdefiniowany do misji przed 20 laty. Naprawdę NASA ma szansę ten rezultat "osiągnąć".

Uważa się, że są rezerwy budżetowe na dodatkowe koszty związane z  opóźnieniem startu związanego z pandemią, ale tylko na kilka miesięcy.

At a June 24 meeting of NASA’s Astrophysics Advisory Committee, Eric Smith, program scientist for JWST at NASA Headquarters, said that while a new target launch date for the giant space telescope hasn’t been determined yet, the agency expected that the costs associated with that slip will be covered by existing budgetary reserves.

“The program has fiscal reserves, in addition to the schedule reserves, and right now we do not anticipate needing additional funding because we have money to pay for extra time in the schedule,” he said. (...)

One kilowatt is about what it takes to heat up some leftovers in a microwave — or to power the largest and most technically advanced telescope ever built. Thanks to its solar array, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will stay energy-efficient more than 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth.

Webb’s 20-foot (6-meter) solar array was recently attached to the main observatory for the final time before launch. The “powerhouse” of the telescope, the array will supply energy to all of the telescope’s scientific instruments and communication and propulsion systems. While Webb will only use 1 kilowatt of power, the solar array is capable of generating nearly double that amount to factor in the gradual wear and tear of a harsh space environment.

The solar array is made up of five panels that are hinged together to easily fold up and stow in Webb’s launch vehicle, the Ariane 5 rocket. When Webb launches in 2021, this deployment will be the first and one of the most critical steps in the observatory’s full deployment process. The telescope’s onboard battery is intended to last only a few hours, up until the solar array unfolds in space and begins converting sunlight into electricity.

In spring 2019, the array was removed from the spacecraft for deployment testing. To minimize friction and mimic the zero-gravity conditions of deep space, the team conducted tests by hanging the array on its side.(...)

(...) Kolejnym krokiem były końcowe testy środowiskowe JWST. W tych testach, wykonanych w zakładach Northrop Grumman, wykonano symulację warunków, jakie teleskop napotka w trakcie startu. W tym przypadku wykonano testy akustyczne oraz wibracyjne. JWST przeszedł te testy zgodnie z planem. (...)

JWST remains on track for October 2021 launch

(...) A new issue is a concern raised by Northrop from work on another program that some fasteners may not have been installed with sufficient torque. Smith said the JWST team looked at more than 12,300 fasteners and determined that about 160 needed to be retorqued during deployment tests. He said it wasn’t clear what schedule impact, if any, that work would have.

No to teraz oczekiwanie na start... Ariane-5. nie wiem...nie ufam za bardzo tym rakietom... Atlas-5 był za słaby? A co z Delta 4-H ? I tak wydali na to kilka mld więcej niż planowali...
