Apparently the Chinese has put a parafoil on one of the fairing halves of the Long March 2C rocket launched earlier today and glided it to a more precise area. It won't help with reuse (yet?) but at least that's one less piece of plastic to dump on people's houses.

Chiński start z satelitą oceanograficznym
BY MICHAŁ MOROZ ON 10 WRZEŚNIA 2018

Start CZ-2C z 7.09.2018 / CAST

China Focus: China launches new marine satellite
Source: Xinhua| 2018-09-07 17:10:03|Editor: Li Xia

CHINA-TAIYUAN-MARINE SATELLITE-LAUNCH (CN)

A Long March-2C rocket carrying the HY-1C satellite takes off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China's Shanxi Province, Sept. 7, 2018. The satellite HY-1C will help improve understanding of maritime waters and climate change. (Xinhua/Zheng Taotao)

TAIYUAN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China sent a new marine satellite into orbit Friday to help improve understanding of maritime waters and climate change.

A Long March-2C rocket carrying the HY-1C satellite took off at 11:15 a.m. from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China's Shanxi Province.

The satellite HY-1C will monitor ocean color and water temperatures, providing basic data for research on the global oceanic environment, according to the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense.

Its data will also be used in the survey of the resources and environment of China's offshore waters, islands and coastal zones, marine disaster relief and the sustainable utilization of ocean resources, said the administration.

With a design life of five years, it was developed by the China Spacesat Co., Ltd. under the China Academy of Space Technology.

China launched its first marine satellite, HY-1A, on May 15, 2002, laying the foundation for a ocean monitoring system.

Then the HY-1B satellite was launched on April 11, 2007.

HY-1C and HY-1D, which is planned to be launched in 2019, are expected to improve China's ocean remote sensing capability.

HY-1C can detect chlorophyll and suspended sediment concentrations and dissolved organic matter, which can affect ocean color, as well as temperatures on the sea surface, said Wang Lili, chief designer of the satellite.

The data will help survey fishery and aquaculture resources and environments, offering a scientific basis for reasonable exploitation and utilization of marine resources, experts said.

Scientists will also use the data to study global environmental changes, the role of the oceans in the global carbon cycle and the El-Nino phenomenon.

The satellite carries an imager to probe suspended sediment in estuaries and harbors in coastal zones, and to forecast and monitor marine environmental disasters, said Wang.

It is equipped with an automatic identification and monitoring system for ships, which will help safeguard maritime rights and interests, and provide data for disaster prevention and mitigation and fishery production, Wang said.

The satellite will save time, manpower and materials in conducting integrated marine surveys, compared with traditional investigation methods on ships.

It could improve China's ability to predict, monitor and evaluate maritime risks such as storm surges, red tides, sea ice and huge waves, and help save lives and property. It can also rapidly get information about the fishery environment and make the oceanic fishery industry more efficient.

The successful launch will help end the long-term shortage of continuous data on ocean color, and promote research on global ocean circulation and changes in the sea surface.

Friday's launch was the 284th by the Long March rocket series.

Indyjski start z dwoma satelitami (16.09.2018)
BY MICHAŁ MOROZ ON 17 WRZEŚNIA 2018

Posiada on rozdzielczość od 30 do 60 metrów.

British Earth-imaging satellites ride Indian rocket into orbit
September 17, 2018 Stephen Clark

(...) NovaSAR 1 is the first synthetic aperture radar satellite entirely built in Britain, and it’s the first commercial radar mission to fly in an orbit that crosses the equator at 10:30 a.m., and again in the other direction around 12 hours later, allowing the spacecraft to return day and night imagery. Many radar reconnaissance satellites are in polar orbits that fly north-south over the planet near the boundary between day and night, a so-called “dawn-dusk” orbit.

NovaSAR 1 carries a radio beacon receiver supplied by Honeywell Aerospace to help identify ships observed by the satellite’s radar. The satellite will also assist in monitoring floods, crops and oil spills.

The SSTL S1-4 observation satellite, fitted with an optical camera and telescope, accompanied NovaSAR 1 into orbit atop the Indian PSLV. It was also built in Guildford, England, by SSTL, which will supply high-resolution imagery from the new satellite to 21AT, a company founded in China and now based in Singapore.

21AT currently uses images from a constellation of three DMC3 Earth-observing satellites launched in 2015. The new spacecraft launched Sunday is identical to the previous three, according to SSTL.

Both satellites are no bigger than a sports car, and each weighed less than 1,000 pounds (450 kilograms) at launch. The spacecraft also are each designed for seven-year missions, and both satellites contacted ground controllers later Sunday, confirming their health after arriving in space.

The PSLV mission Sunday was designated PSLV-C42, and it was the 44th flight of a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, and the fourth Indian launch of this year. SSTL booked the launch with Antrix, the commercial arm of ISRO. (...)

Indian PSLV launches two British satellites
written by Chris Bergin And William Graham September 16, 2018

India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket has launched two British satellites into a 583 km Sun Synchronous Orbit on Sunday. The lofting of SSTL S1-4 and NovaSAR-1 took place from the First Launch Pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre with T-0 occurring at 16:37 UTC.

ISRO’s return to action is set to mark an upturn in launch activity for the Indian space agency.

“We are going to conduct 19 missions, including 10 satellites and nine launch vehicles, between September and March,” noted ISRO chairman K Siva to the Times of India ahead of this launch. “For ISRO, this will be the highest density period for launches as never before we had launched two satellites within 30 days consecutively for months. ”

To kick off that launch salvo, the PSLV was employed to launch two commercial satellites, which is a rare use for the rocket. (...)

Chińska konstelacja satelitarna rozrasta się
BY ALEKSANDER FIUK ON 24 WRZEŚNIA 2018 CNSA, MISJE ORBITALNE

Start CZ-3B z satelitami Beidou / CASC

W 2000 roku wyniesiono dwa pierwsze satelity, 3 lata później kolejnego i w ten sposób powstał pierwszy, eksperymentalny system Beidou-1. Opierał się on wyłącznie na tych trzech urządzeniach na orbicie geostacjonarnej i kiedy w 2004 roku go uruchomiono, był w stanie wskazywać pozycję z precyzją 20m. W 2007 roku dołączył do nich ostatni satelita generacji Beidou-1, by zapewnić konstelacji redundancję i ciągłość działania do czasu zastąpienia systemu eksperymentalnego przez operacyjny.

China sends twin BeiDou-3 navigation satellites into space on a single carrier rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Xichang, southwest China's Sichuan Province, Sept. 19, 2018. (Xinhua/Liang Keyan)

XICHANG, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday evening successfully sent twin BeiDou-3 navigation satellites into space on a single carrier rocket.

The Long March-3B carrier rocket lifted off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 10:07 p.m. It was the 285th mission of the Long March rocket series.

The twin satellites are the 37th and 38th editions of the BeiDou navigation system. After a series of tests and evaluations, they will work together with 12 BeiDou-3 satellites already in orbit.

The twin satellites will provide danger alerts and navigation services for global users. A basic system with 18 orbiting BeiDou-3 satellites will be in place by the end of the year, which will serve countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.

The satellites and the rocket for Wednesday's launch were developed by the China Academy of Space Technology and the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, respectively.

Named after the Chinese term for the Big Dipper, the BeiDou system started serving China in 2000 and the Asia-Pacific region in 2012.

(...) The satellites launched Wednesday were the 12th and 13th Beidou spacecraft delivered to orbit this year, and they are the first Beidou satellites to carry equipment meeting international search-and-rescue standards. A receiver on each satellite will listen for distress signals, joining spacecraft from other countries that host similar search-and-rescue payloads, according to the Beidou program’s official government website.

At least two more Chinese launches with Beidou navigation payloads are scheduled before the end of the year, according to the Beidou program’s website, maintaining a streak of rocket flights lofting the satellites two-at-a-time.

Wednesday’s Long March 3B was the 25th space launch of the year from China, which has launched more space missions than any other nation so far in 2018. (...)
