Current plans call for their next EVA together on 16 July to begin the Channel 3B battery work, with an expectation that another “would follow some days after”, according to Mr. Huot. Short Extravehicular Mobility Unit (SEMU) Launch Enclosure Briefing: FE-12 participated in a briefing which covered preparing EMU 3008 for return, removal of EMU 3015 from the SLE and installing EMU 3008 into the SLE in the Dragon cabin. This swap is planned for tomorrow.

USOS EVA preparation: The crew began preparing for the upcoming 4A ISS Roll-Out Solar Array (IROSA) Prep EVA.  The crew gathered tools and performed an inspection of the safety tethers, waist tethers, and D-Ring extenders.   The USOS EVA is currently planned for August ^25th.

NASA Flight Engineer Mark Vande Hei joined Commander Akihiko Hoshide gathering spacewalking tools and checking spacesuit tethers inside the U.S. Quest airlock. The crew is ramping up for a spacewalk to prepare the orbital lab’s Port-4 truss structure ahead of the installation of the next set of roll out solar arrays.

Spacewalk is Postponed

The U.S. spacewalk outside the International Space Station originally planned for Tuesday, Aug. 24 with NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide has been postponed due to a minor medical issue involving Vande Hei. This issue is not a medical emergency. The spacewalk is not time-sensitive and crew members are continuing to move forward with other station work and activities. Teams are assessing the next available opportunity to conduct the spacewalk following the SpaceX CRS-23 cargo resupply launch planned for Aug. 28 and upcoming Russian spacewalks. The preview briefing Aug. 23 is also being rescheduled and will be announced at a later date.

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Mobility Unit (EMU) Activities: Today the crew began EMU activities with the Short EMU (SEMU) Launch Enclosure (SLE) Training to prepare for upcoming EMU rotation using the SLE, which is a preparation activity for the return and unpacking of EMUs. Next, crew removed the EMU Data Recorder (EDaR), EDaR Antenna, EDaR Antenna Cable, and High-Definition EMU Camera Assembly (HECA) from EMU 3006, which is returning on SpX-24. Finally, crew completed the termination of the EVA Battery Operations Terminal Autocycle of EVA Li-Ion Batteries.

Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) Operations: EMU 3015 encountered a hardline communications issue during a previous EMU preparation activity.  Today, the crew worked with the ground team to troubleshoot and isolate where the squealing sound is coming from.  Additionally, the crew performed an EMU Swap to reconfigure EMUs on EMU Don-Doff Assemblies (EDDAs) for upcoming activities.

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Preparations: The crew continued its preparation for the two EVAs in March. For today’s preparations, the crew started by degassing two EVA Contingency Water Container-Iodinated (CWC-I) bags. Next, they removed two EVA Batteries from the Battery Stowage Compartment for use in Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) 3009 and EMU 3013. With the batteries installed in the two EMUs, the crew then performed a feedwater tank half dump and fill on both EMUs to add iodinated water from the degassed CWC-I bags to satisfy EMU maintenance requirements for on-orbit stowage. Finally, to wrap up the preparations, they restowed the batteries and reconfigured the EMUs on the EMU Don-Doff Assemblies (EDDAs) for upcoming activities.

Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMUs) 3004/3015 EVA Prep: The crew removed the lithium-ion batteries from the EMU Battery Stowage Compartment, and performed EMU water loop scrubs as well as acquired and tested water samples for conductivity on EMU units 3004 and 3015. Additionally, the crew installed the ORU Scrubber to scrub and iodinate the water lines. EMU Loop Scrubs are required preventive maintenance needed to remove any chemical and biological contaminants from the EMU transport loop. The next activity performed by crew included an EVA Tool configuration, followed by water recharges on EMUs 3004 and 3015. The recharges ensure there is a full supply of fresh cooling water to each EMU suit. Additionally, the crew filled Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garments (LCVGs) with water from EMU water tanks.

Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMU) Resize: Crew stowed EMUs 3004 and 3015 in the crewlock and installed EMUs 3009 and 3013 on EMU Don/Doff Assembly (EDDA). Crew then installed legs and boots on EMU 3009 and swapped arms on EMU 3013.

EMU 3009/3013 Loop Scrub, and Iodination: The crew performed EMU water loop scrubs and then acquired and tested water samples for conductivity on EMUs 3009 and 3013. During the loop scrub on EMU 3009, the suit’s HECA unit received a software upgrade. Additionally, the crew installed the Hard Upper Torso (HUT) ORU Scrubber to spare HUT 2038 to scrub and iodinate the spare HUT water lines. EMU Loop Scrubs are required preventive maintenance needed to remove any chemical and biological contaminants from the EMU transport loop.

Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) Short Extravehicular Mobility Unit (SEMU) Launch Enclosure (SLE) Rotation: At the completion of the IRU R&R, the crew installed EMU 3015 into the SLE in the SpX-25 cabin so it can be returned with the vehicle. The SLE is a 6-sided aluminum box used to transport a SEMU up to the ISS and return back to Earth on commercial vehicles.

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Preparation Activities: Several activities were performed by the crew in preparation for upcoming EVAs. EVA Li-Ion Battery charging was terminated, and the Rechargeable EVA Battery Assemblies (REBAs) were removed from the Battery Stowage Compartment and installed into the EVA Battery Operations Terminal for charging. The crew also installed the EVA Helmet Lights and cameras onto the EVA Mobility Unit (EMU) Helmet. Lastly, EMUs 3009 and 3013 were resized and EMU hardware was pre-gathered for SpX-26 return.
