HOUSTON, May 25 -- Astronaut Patricia Hilliard Robertson died Thursday night of injuries suffered earlier this week in a small plane crash near Houston, NASA announced Friday.
Robertson, 38, was a passenger in a plane that crashed Tuesday at Wolfe Air Park in Manvel, southeast of Houston.
The pilot, Roy Mack Paul Adams, 46, of Alvin, was reported in critical condition at Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston.
The plane crashed as the two practiced landing and takeoff maneuvers, according to the Houston Chronicle. The two were on fire when they emerged from the wreckage and were sprayed with a fire extinguisher, the newspaper said.
Robertson, of El Lago, was a member of the astronaut class of 1998 and was assigned as a crew support astronaut for the Expedition Two crew on board the International Space Station. In that role, she was a liaison between the Mission Control Center flight control team and the Astronaut Office on issues related to the Expedition Two crew and, along with other astronauts, coordinated activities on the ground for the three crew members in space, NASA said.
Robertson, a native of Pennsylvania, joined NASA's Flight Medicine Clinic at the Johnson Space Center in 1997 prior to being selected to be an astronaut. In addition to being a medical doctor, she was a multi-engine-rated flight instructor with more than 1,500 hours of flight time.
Robertson's family plans a private memorial service. Final funeral arrangements are pending.
Flags at the Johnson Space Center were flown at half-staff Friday in her honor.https://www.upi.com/Archives/2001/05/25/Astronaut-dies-from-crash-injuries/9914990763200/2)
