L'Agence spatiale française a rendu hommage au "premier scientifique français à avoir séjourné dans l'espace" décédé à l'âge de 73 ans. Il avait notamment volé à bord de la navette spatiale Columbia.

Physicien et ingénieur de formation, Jean-Jacques Favier avait été sélectionné en 1985 comme "astronaute expérimentateur" par l'agence spatiale française, alors qu'il était ingénieur-chercheur au Commissariat l'énergie atomique (CEA).
Le "parcours exemplaire" de Jean-Jacques FavierAu sein du CNES, il devient responsable scientifique du four spatial Mephisto, qui a volé plusieurs fois à bord de la navette spatiale Columbia. En 1995, il est désigné comme astronaute spécialiste d'une expérience du laboratoire Spacelab emporté par le vaisseau américain. Il passe 16 jours, 21 heures et 48 minutes en orbite, du 20 juin au 7 juillet 1996. Soit 14 ans après Jean-Loup Chrétien, le premier Français à avoir volé dans l'espace, à bord d'un vaisseau russe Soyouz. Jean-Jacques Favier devient ainsi "le premier scientifique français à avoir séjourné dans l'espace", précise le CNES, rendant hommage à son "parcours exemplaire".
Trente expériences de physique en micro-gravité"Il marquera de son empreinte les futures générations et inspirera nombre d'entre nous", ajoute le PDG du CNES Philippe Baptiste, dans le communiqué. Durant sa mission, Jean-Jacques Favier fut responsable de plus de 30 expériences de physique en micro-gravité. Après sa carrière d'astronaute, il s'est engagé dans l'éducation et la recherche, en collaborant notamment à un projet du CNES de préparation d'une future base lunaire et/ou martienne.

A physicist by training, in 1985 he joined the group of astronauts at the National Center for Space Studies (CNES) as an experimental astronaut, when he was a research engineer at the Atomic Energy Commission ( ECA). The French space agency is indeed opening the selection to non-pilots for the first time.
But the opportunity for a mission did not arise and in 1992, Jean-Jacques Favier left France for the United States. He then applied directly to NASA, a profitable choice since the American space agency would fly him four years later. 256 orbits around the Earth used to carry out a large number of experiments. In total, he spent 16 days, 21 hours and 48 minutes in orbit, from June 20 to July 7, 1996. That is 14 years after Jean-Loup Chrétien, the first Frenchman to have flown into space, aboard a spacecraft Russian Soyuz.
