NASA History Office @NASAhistory 4:00 PM · Jan 6, 2025Through the Vietnam era, fighter research had been all about speed. But in the 1970s, driven by a national energy crisis, new digital technology, and changes in combat, researchers at what is now @NASAArmstrong looked for ways to test the extremes of fighter maneuverability. The HiMAT project represented this shift in focus. Two research vehicles about half the size of an F-16 were flown from mid 1979 to Jan 1983. These subscale vehicles demonstrated advanced fighter technologies used in many modern performance military aircraft.Because the aircraft were controlled from a ground station, experimental technologies and high-risk maneuverability tests could be employed without endangering pilots. In this photo, NASA test pilot Bill Dana trains in the HiMAT cockpit.Technologies tested on the HiMAT vehicles include the extensive use of composites common now on military and commercial aircraft; rear-mounted wing and forward canard configuration; and winglets, now used on many aircraft to lessen wingtip drag and enhance fuel savings.
