Staffing shortages, including an elevated number of workers calling in sick at airports across the US, on Monday affected major airports around New York, Los Angeles and Denver on Monday, delaying over 6,000 flights across the US. (...)
The transportation secretary, Sean Duffy, warned Tuesday that the country’s air traffic control system is being harmed by the government shutdown.
During a visit to Newark Liberty airport in New Jersey, Duffy said the shutdown has increased stress on controllers, who are already working with outdated equipment, and he blamed Democrats for the situation.
“They’re not just now thinking about the airspace,” Duffy said of air traffic controllers, who are not paid during a shutdown. “They’re thinking about, ‘Am I going to get a paycheck?”

Keep calling your representatives, folks. It’s Day 7, and Democrats stand ready to work with Republicans to end this shutdown and keep health care premiums from spiking — if they’re ready to come to the table.

Are we going to stand with the richest Americans or working people? That's the fundamental question in this fight.
I’m sticking with hardworking Americans.

The Republicans could end this shutdown by negotiating a decrease to your rising health insurance premiums. They don’t want to do that because that premium increase will pay for their tax cut for rich people.

Francis Vincent Do Democrats' policies favor the poor more than Republicans' do?
The rich used to pay a lot more in taxes than they do today. In the 1950's the top marginal tax rate was 92%! In the 1970's it was still 70%. In the 1980's President Reagan claimed that if we cut taxes on the wealthy and on business it would fuel an economic boom that would benefit everyone. Under Reagan the top marginal tax rate was slashed to 28%. A lot of wealthy people get more income from their investments than from their labor and income from capital gains was taxed at an even lower rate than income from labor. This theory is called supply side economics and Reagan called it trickle down economics. All the extra money the wealthy enjoyed would trickle down to everyone else. The problem is that it didn't work. In 40 years of supply side trickle down economics wages for eveyone except the wealthiest percentile of Americans have been stagnant or declining. Today Americans work longer, harder and are more productive than ever but for less money, fewer benefits and no job security. Now Democrats are saying that the wealthy who are the only ones who benefited from supply side economics should start paying a little more in taxes. Nobody is saying it would be 70% or 90% like it use to be but perhaps 50% and income from capital gains should be taxed at a similar rate. With this money we could invest more in infrastructure and make college cheaper so ordinary people can get ahead.

Dennis wrote my office to tell me how much the ACA tax credits mean to him and his wife. I called him back to learn more. He’s on Medicare, but his wife’s premiums could jump from $440 to $1,100 a month without the tax credit. That’s going to eat away at the retirement they’ve been saving for all their lives. I’m fighting for people like them.
