Three-Time Spaceflight Astronaut Steven Swanson Retires From NASA

With nearly 200 days of spaceflight experience, astronaut Steven Swanson has retired from NASA to share his experience and expertise in an academic setting. Swanson will join Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, as a distinguished educator in residence. His last day with NASA is August 30. 

“Steve Swanson, or Swanny as we know him, has contributed so much more to the human space program than just serving on his three missions. His infectious laugh, keen intellect and easy going personality have garnered the respect and friendship of everyone with whom he works. He also will be sorely missed on our Wednesday night basketball team!” said Chris Cassidy, chief of the Astronaut Office at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Swanson was born in Syracuse, New York, and considers Steamboat Springs, Colorado, his hometown. He earned a doctorate in computer science from Texas A&M University in College Station, and holds degrees from the University of Colorado in Boulder and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

Swanson joined NASA in 1987 as a systems engineer and a flight engineer in the Aircraft Operations Division at Johnson, working on the Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA). During his time with the STA, Swanson helped improve the STA’s navigation and control systems and incorporate a real-time wind determination algorithm.

He was selected as an astronaut in May of 1998. He would go on to fly three space missions, including a long-duration mission on the International Space Station. Additionally, he served numerous technical roles within the Astronaut Office Space Station Operations and Robotics branches, as well as serving as a capsule communicator, or capcom.

Swanson flew as a mission specialist for STS-117 on Space Shuttle Atlantis in June 2007 and STS-119 on Space Shuttle Discovery in March 2009. Both missions delivered station truss segments, solar arrays, and other equipment to the station. Swanson conducted two spacewalks on each mission, totaling more than 26 hours of extravehicular activity experience.

Swanson’s final mission was a long duration stay on the station as part of the Expedition 39 and 40 crews in 2014. During his six-month tour of duty aboard the orbiting laboratory, Swanson performed various Earth remote sensing and biology, bone and muscle physiology studies and performed a spacewalk. He assumed command of the station in May 2014 and was commander through his landing on Sept. 10, marking an end to his 169 days in orbit. In total, following his three missions, Swanson accumulated more than 195 days in space.

NASA’s Steve Swanson on Campus Nov. 12

NASA astronaut and Boise State Professor of the Practice Steve Swanson will share stories about his time aboard the International Space Station at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Student Union Simplot Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public. Hourly parking is available in the Lincoln Avenue Garage.

Swanson spent six months in orbit on the ISS, from March to September 2014; in May he took over as commander of Expedition 40.

Steve SwansonDuring a live downlink from space sponsored by the Space Broncos student group, Swanson spoke with Boise State students and the community, and demonstrated some of the unusual aspects of living in microgravity. The downlink was a highlight of Boise State’s Space Symposium, which included presentations by students and faculty engaged in NASA-related research and education programs.

Swanson will present Boise State University with a ball cap he wore during that downlink from space at a special on-field recognition during the Nov. 15 football game against San Diego State in Albertsons Stadium.

While in Boise, he also will visit with engineering students and tour several research labs on campus.

“Steve Swanson’s visit is a great boost for our students and faculty and it reminds us that NASA is an integral part of our community,” said Barbara Morgan, former NASA astronaut and current distinguished educator in residence at Boise State. “We are pleased to have several strong ties to NASA, including NASA-funded research programs, participation in the Microgravity University and Zero Robotics programs, student internships, the NASA Pre-Service Teacher Institute, the McNair Scholars Program, Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars and our own Space Broncos Team Swanson student organization.”

Swanson, who has a Ph.D. in computer science, became an astronaut in 1998. His flight experience includes two space shuttle missions and one long-duration mission on the International Space Station. On the 2007 Atlantis shuttle mission, Swanson helped deliver, install and repair equipment and performed two spacewalks on the space station. On  2009’s Discovery shuttle mission to the space station, Swanson again delivered and installed equipment and performed two spacewalks. As commander of the International Space Station’s Expedition 40, he led the team of astronauts and cosmonauts and conducted science and technology experiments.

Swanson and his family live in Houston, Texas. His parents live in Eagle, Idaho.

Swanson is one of five Boise State University Professors of the Practice. The program identifies talented and accomplished business, scientific and artistic leaders from around the country and beyond and invites them to bring world-class experience and excitement to Boise State students. Other Professors of the Practice include artist Benjamin Victor, Whole Foods CEO Walter Robb, filmmaker Ben Shedd, and journalist and movie animator Steve Moore.

ostatni japoński nowicjusz z naboru JAXA z 2009.

Na NASAspaceflight doniesiono, że tym Amerykaninem w locie Sojuza w listopadzie 2017 będzie Randy BRESNIK,
który jak dotąd raz latał w kosmos Atlantisem w 2009 w misji STS-129.

Nasze "Loty kosmiczne" też już to podają.

Od czasu „zasiedlenia” Stacji przez sześcioosobowe załogi (dolatujące na Sojuzach) Europejczycy i Japończycy pracują na pokładzie Międzynarodowej Stacji Kosmicznej naprzemiennie.

Wygląda to tak:

Złamanie tej naprzemienności nastąpiło zatem już raz w 2014 kiedy polecieli A.Gerst i S.Cristoforetti „nierozdzieleni” Japończykiem
i nastąpi w 2017 kiedy polecą kolejno T.Pesquet i P.Nespoli.

Ale postawienie flagi ESA jest tu pewnym uproszczeniem; zwracam uwagę, że ci „nadliczbowi” Europejczycy to Włosi – mający zapewnione dodatkowe możliwości lotów w wyniku rozliczeń między NASA a ASI (włoską agencją kosmiczną) z tytułu zbudowanych we Włoszech MPLM-ów: Leonardo, Raffaello i Donatello.

Ale gdyby istotnie w załodze 54/55 miałby być kolejny Europejczyk i to jeszcze Włoch, to już by chyba było za dużo.

Wydaje się, że danie Japończykom miejsce w tej załodze należy się z normalnej rotacji załogantów ESA i JAXA.

Dopiero w lotach użytkowych. Od początku mówiono o dwuosobowej obsadzie lotów testowych, tak też mam to wprowadzone tutaj.

I dlatego powtórzę swoją wątpliwość.
Jeżeli w lotach testowych ma polecieć 3 astronautów NASA (1 w Boeingu i 2 w Dragonie)
i jeżeli do każdego stanowiska potrzeba dublera,
to ten "pododdział" do lotów komercyjnych powinien składać się z nie z 4, lecz z 6 astronautów.
