WASHINGTON — A startup developing a balloon-borne small launch vehicle has gone into “hibernation” after struggling to raise money, a fate that may be facing many other companies in the sector.

In a March 13 letter to the company’s investors and other associates, Leo Aerospace said challenges raising funding and concerns about market timing led the startup to decide to suspend operations, with the understanding that it may never resume work.

“Yes, we have decided to shut things down for the time being,” Dane Rudy, co-founder and chief executive of Leo Aerospace, confirmed in a March 16 email. “Funding was a major component.” (...)

Leo Aerospace was developing a small launch system designed to place up to 25 kilograms into a sun-synchronous orbit. The company’s launch vehicle would use solid-propellant motors for its first two stages and a storable liquid propellant upper stage. The company planned to commercially source those propulsion systems. (...)

Z powodu koronowirusa zmniejszona ilość  pasażerów linii lotniczych ma wpływ na pogorszenie sytuacji firmy Gogo - dostawcy wi-fi satelitarnego na pokładzie samolotów.

Gogo pursuing satellite contract changes as coronavirus dampens demand
by Caleb Henry — March 17, 2020

Gogo said it cannot forecast its 2020 financial performance because of travel uncertainty stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Credit: Gogo

WASHINGTON — Gogo, an in-flight Wi-Fi provider with capacity on 34 satellites, will seek price concessions to rein in bandwidth costs as airlines continue to ground flights amid coronavirus-related travel bans.

Gogo CEO Oakleigh Thorne said the coronavirus pandemic is partly behind the company’s cost-saving efforts, since decreased airline traffic has had a knock-on effect on demand for passenger Wi-Fi.

“This is a very, very, very bad moving situation in our industry,” Thorne said during a March 13 earnings call.

Gogo reported a net loss of $146 million on $835.7 million in 2019 revenue. The company narrowed its losses by 10% from 2018 while boosting free cash flow to $162.6 million, beating forecasts by $100 million.  (...)

Firma AAC CLYDE SPACE budująca CubeSaty uważa , że 70 % pracy można wykonywać zdalnie

Cytuj
Cubesat builder AAC Clyde is urging all staff that can work from home to do so amid the global COVID-19 outbreak, estimating that 70% of its employees are in positions that enable remote work. The remaining 30% are involved in manufacturing activities that require a physical presence. AAC Clyde said it will not participate in conferences or exhibitions for the next two months, and has introduced a near-term travel ban to avoid the risk of employees getting quarantined or stranded due to national and regional travel restrictions.

OHB budująca satelity nie spodziewa się z powodu koronowirusa strat finansowych, a jedynie opóźnień w realizacji zadań. Klienci dysponujący publicznymi funduszami są mniej podatni na perturbacje.

OHB says coronavirus may delay satellite projects but won’t cost revenue
by Caleb Henry — March 18, 2020

WASHINGTON — The slow-moving nature of spacecraft manufacturing will insulate OHB Systems, at least temporarily, from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a company executive.

OHB CEO Marco Fuchs said the company is standing by its forecast of generating 1.1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) in revenue this year, even though that projection was made five weeks ago, before the COVID-19 virus had become a global outbreak.

The Bremen, Germany-based company builds spacecraft mainly for government customers, including the European Space Agency and the European Commission, on multiyear timelines the company expects are too long to see major revenue losses, Fuchs said.

“The major difference from the space industry to many other industries is we are not at risk with regards to revenues,” Fuchs said. “There might be delays but it’s not a cancellation. The demand is not changing.”

OHB builds Europe’s Galileo navigation satellites, and is competing for participation in several Copernicus environmental-monitoring program satellites. (...)
