Prototype of Space Station's Advanced Plant Habitat

A high fidelity test version of NASA’s Advanced Plant Habitat (APH), the largest plant chamber built for the agency, arrived at Kennedy Space Center in Florida the third week of November, 2016. The engineering development unit arrived by truck, was offloaded and transported to a laboratory at the Space Station Processing Facility. Inside the lab, NASA engineers, and scientists and technicians will train with the test unit to learn how to handle and assemble it before the actual APH unit arrives early next year. They also will test how the science integrates with the various systems of the plant habitat.

The unit is a closed-loop system with a controlled environment than can house large plants. The system will use red, green and blue LED lights, similar to the Veggie growth system that is currently on the International Space Station. The APH also has the capability of using white LEDs and infrared light. The APH unit  will have 180 sensors and four times the light output of Veggie. The small-scale experiment, called Plant Habitat 1 or PH01, will contain Arabidopsis seeds, small flowering plants related to cabbage and mustard. PH01 and the APH unit will be delivered to the space station in 2017.

The Plant Habitat growing space accommodates a shoot area of 1708 cm2, a shoot height of 43 cm, a root area of 1853 cm2, and a root height of 5 cm. The Plant Habitat has a method-active temperature control that uses thermoelectric coolers with a range of +18 to +30 °C and an accuracy of ±0.5 °C from the set point; temperature is uniform within ±1 °C in the plant canopy plane. Humidity is in the range of 50 to 90 percent relative humidity (RH) and is accurate within ±3 percent RH from the set point and uniform within ±5 percent RH in the plant canopy plane.  Also in the shoot zone, Plant Habitat provides sensor capability to measure light levels in the photosythetically active and the red/far red range and the ability to measure the surface temperature of a plant canopy or other sample surface.  In the root zone, the standard Plant Habitat science platform provides a variety of sensing capabilities that include:  root zone temperature, moisture levels and oxygen content.

Wartości poziomów promieniowania kosmicznego w BEAM są podobne jak w innych modułach.
Temperatury w normie.
Nie zaobserwowano większych uderzeń kosmicznych śmieci w moduł.

To byłoby ciekawe, gdyby coś większego uderzyło w BEAM i doszłoby do utraty ciśnienia. Ciekawe, jak by to wyglądało...

Myślę, że gdyby coś większego leciało na stację, wówczas ta zmieniłaby kurs. A na drobniejsze śmieci podobno BEAM jest podobnie odporny jak metalowe moduły. Zresztą dwa Genesis-y zebrały już chyba wystarczająco dużo danych. Obydwa zdaje się ciągle jeszcze żyją, co dobrze świadczy o ich odporności na kosmiczny drobiazg.

Na pokładzie zniszczonego statku transportowego Progress MS-04 wśród 2442kg ładunku znajdował się nowy rosyjski skafander Orłan MKS №0930003. Następny Progress MS powinien dostarczyć pierwszy skafander tego typu na MSK.

Przy okazji aktualnie na pokładzie MSK znajdują się 3 skafandry typu Orłan MK o №1170004, №1080005 i №1080006, które były wykorzystane do odpowiednio 16, 13 i 15 wyjść poza stację.

13.12.2016 o 11:37 czasu polskiego wykonano uchwycenie HTV-6, a o 14:57 przyłączenie do MSK. Ramieniem SSRMS sterowali Shane Kimbrough i Thomas Pesquet.
