Ciekawa informacja! Z drugiej strony - przy większej ilości ładunków (w tym eksperymentów naukowych) można się spodziewać, że któryś się zepsuje wcześniej.

Drugi spacer amerykańskich astronautów Drew Feustela i Ricky Arnolda o oznaczeniu EVA-51 jest planowany na 30 maja. Będzie to jubileuszowy spacer nr 400. Wpływ na jego termin może mieć opóźnienie startu i przybycia na MSK statku Cygnus-9, którego start jest obecnie zaplanowany na 20 maja. Jego zadania są wymienione w dzisiejszym doniesieniu o zaplanowanej na 8 maja konferencji dotyczącej zaplanowanym spacerom EVA-50 i 51.

Czterysetny spacer kosmiczny... Trzecia setka spacerów rozpoczęła się 20 listopada 2008 roku, podczas misji STS-126. Czyli pełna setka spacerów w mniej niż 10 lat!

Niestety pewnie spacer nr 500 odbędzie się później niż za 10 lat, bo ISS już jest zbudowana, a kolejne stacje nie będą wymagać aż takiej ilości spacerów. Nie będzie chyba też co serwisować (np. HST)... No ale może spacer nr 500 odbędzie się na powierzchni Księżyca?

Jubileuszony spacer amerykański EVA-50 astronautów Andrew Faustela i Ricka Arnolda jest planowany na 16 maja. Start Sojuza MS-09 zaplanowany jest 06 czerwca, Sojuza MS-10 na 11 października i Sojuza MS-11 na 20 grudnia.

Two NASA astronauts are scheduled to venture outside the International Space Stationfor a pair of six-and-a-half-hour spacewalks May 16 and 30. Experts from NASA will preview the work to be done during the spacewalks in a briefing at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday, May 8, at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Live coverage of the briefing and spacewalks will air on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

Expedition 55 Flight Engineers Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold will put on spacesuits for what will be the 210th and 211th spacewalks in support of station assembly, maintenance and upgrades. These spacewalks will be the eighth and ninth of Feustel’s career, and the fourth and fifth of Arnold’s. The primary objectives are to finish upgrading cooling system hardware and install new and updated communications equipment for future dockings of commercial crew spacecraft.

Media wishing to participate in the May 8 briefing in person must request credentials from the Johnson newsroom no later than 4 p.m. Monday, May 7. Media interested in participating by phone must contact the newsroom by 1:45 p.m. May 8.

The first spacewalk will begin about 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, May 16. NASA TV coverage will begin at 6:30 a.m. Feustel and Arnold will move a component called a Pump Flow Control Subassembly (PFCS) from a spare parts platform on the station’s truss “backbone” to the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (Dextre) robotic arm. The PFCS drives and controls the flow of ammonia through the exterior portions of the station’s cooling system. Robotics controllers on Earth will use Canadarm2 and Dextre to perform final installation on the port-side truss for checkout. The spacewalkers will remove a failed PFCS and return it to the spare parts depot. They’ll also replace a camera system on the Destiny Laboratory and a communications receiver. This also be the 50th spacewalk originating from the station’s Quest airlock. Other assembly and maintenance spacewalks have begun from space shuttle and Russian airlocks.

The second spacewalk is planned for Wednesday, May 30, but the exact timing is dependent on the anticipated May 24 arrival of the Orbital ATK Cygnus cargo resupply spacecraft. The ninth Cygnus cargo mission is scheduled to launch May 20 from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

During the May 30 spacewalk, Arnold and Feustel will install a pair of brackets and high-definition cameras on the Harmony module that will help commercial crewvehicles align with the international docking adapter at the forward end of Harmony. The cameras also will provide wireless data network access for experiments and facilities mounted on the ESA (European Space Agency) Columbus laboratory and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Kibo laboratory. The crew also will replace a camera on the station’s starboard truss.

(...) Dragon w misji CRS-14 przewiózł na ISS łącznie ponad 2,6 tony ładunku w sekcji ciśnieniowej oraz “bagażniku” kapsuły. Na ten ładunek składały się: części zamienne, nowe eksperymenty, żywność, ubrania oraz trzy ładunki w “bagażniku”. Wśród nich znalazł się eksperyment Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM), który został zbudowany przy współudziale naukowców i inżynierów z Polski. (...)

International Space Station officials will preview a pair of upcoming spacewalks live on NASA TV Tuesday. Meanwhile, Orbital ATK is getting its Cygnus resupply ship ready for launch in less than two weeks while the Expedition 55 crew focuses on biomedical studies today.

Two NASA astronauts are going out for a spacewalk May 16 to swap out thermal control gear that circulates ammonia to keep station systems cool. Station experts will be on NASA TV beginning at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday to preview next week’s spacewalk including a second spacewalk planned for June 14. Both excursions will be conducted by veteran spacewalkers Ricky Arnold and Drew Feustel.

Feustel and Arnold verified their spacesuits are sized correctly with assistance from astronauts Scott Tingle of NASA and Norishige Kanai from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. Tingle also checked the batteries that power the U.S. spacesuits.

On May 20, just four days after the first spacewalk, Orbital ATK is planning to launch its Cygnus space freighter on a four day trip to the orbital laboratory. Cygnus will resupply the Expedition 55 crew with new science experiments, crew supplies, station hardware and gear that will be installed on the June 14 spacewalk.

Today’s science taking place onboard the station explored how microgravity affects blood pressure and blood vessels. Kanai started his day photographing his face to help scientists understand how the upward flow of fluids impacts intracranial pressure affecting a crew member’s eyes. He later attached sensors to his legs, scanned them with an ultrasound device and checked his blood pressure for the Vascular Echo study.

For each CRS mission, it is a tradition at Orbital ATK to name the Cygnus cargo spacecraft for an individual who has furthered our nation’s human spaceflight programs. For our OA-9 mission, we are proud to announce that the OA-9 spacecraft will be named after J.R. Thompson, a distinguished leader in the aerospace industry and a member of our Orbital ATK family. Throughout his life, J.R. held prominent positions at NASA, the Marshall Space Flight Center, and Orbital Sciences. We are honored to celebrate his life with the upcoming launch of the S.S. J.R. Thompson.

Podtrzymywanie ISS tak długo ,  jak będzie to użyteczne , ma swoich  zwolenników.

Jeszcze nie ma pełnej amerykańskiej obsady stacji , więc przyspieszona deorbitacja , wg mnie , byłaby przedwczesna.
Przydałoby się więcej ponadstandardowo długich lotów załogowych.

Niedługo do użytku mają wejść amerykańskie załogowe pojazdy kosmiczne. Dobrze by było , gdyby miały możliwość dłuższego sprawdzenia się w praktyce , zwłaszcza w sytuacji nie do  końca pewnej ,  w miarę szybko ,  następnej niechińskiej stacji orbitalnej.

Perspektywa działającej chińskiej stacji orbitalnej i praktycznie uziemionych Amerykanów  wizerunkowo  byłaby nieciekawa ( loty do Międzynarodowej Stacji Księżycowej byłyby raczej  krótkie)
Są pewne przesłanki, by sądzić , że chińska stacja byłaby międzynarodowa (ale czy z Amerykanami?)

Cruz remains opposed to ending ISS in mid-2020s

(...) Speaking at the Humans to Mars Summit here by the Mars exploration advocacy group Explore Mars, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said ending federal funding of the station in 2025, a proposal included in NASA’s fiscal year 2019 budget request, ran counter to existing laws calling for its continued use beyond 2024.

“As long as I am chairman of the space subcommittee, we will not be phasing out the ISS as long as there is scientifically usable life and we can continue to extend that,” he said. “It would be irresponsible not to get the maximum return from that investment and to extend the life of it as long as it is scientifically feasible.” (...)
