Robert Stewart: first Army pilot to fly in space
Feb. 2, 1984 By OLIVE TALLEY

There was, however, a time when it looked like the former Hattiesburg, Miss., resident would never get the chance to learn to fly.

'My mother was absolutely against it ... I went to the public library in Hattiesburg and checked out every book on aviation I could find. And everywhere mother looked -- under a pile of dirty clothes on the floor -- there was a book on aviation. I stuck them in the refrigerator and everywhere around there,' Stewart recalled.

'She finally said 'I give up. I'm through harassing and being harassed. Go fly if you want to.''

Stewart got his private pilot's license in 1960 as a senior in high school. Part-time civilian flying jobs earning him extra money while earning a math degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1964. (...)

My Daddy was a soldier in World War 2.  My uncles were soldiers. I wanted to be a soldier too,” said Robert Stewart. He also wanted to fly, and Stewart said Army Aviation was the perfect opportunity. A couple of days  late, Happy Birthday to one of my favourite astronauts, Bob Stewart. Bob flew two flights, STS-41B and 51J. (10th and 21st Shuttle missions). He also made two EVAs on 41B, both involved testing out the MMU.
