Satelita miał kształt cylindra o wysokości 4,7 m i masę 420 kg.
Rozbłysk słoneczny, który miał miejsce 14 lipca 2000 r. spowodował ogrzanie i ekspansję górnej atmosfery, powodując tym samym zwiększenie oporu i zewnętrznego momentu obrotowego ASCA.
Panele słoneczne utraciły orientację na Słońce, co spowodowało rozładowanie akumulatorów.
Satelita działał w trybie ograniczonym aż do deorbitacji w dniu 2 marca 2021 roku.
