On January 24 and 25, 1984, GEOS-2 became the first ESA spacecraft to be removed from geostationary orbit. To raise the spacecraft's orbit, an acceleration along the velocity vector had to be achieved. This was accomplished by firing one of GEOS-2's radial thrusters in a pulse mode. After 3 maneuvers which were telecommanded through the Redu ground station in Belgium, the 273-kg spacecraft was raised to a final orbital altitude of 42,426 km. This paced GEOS-2 in a new near-circular orbit about 260 km above the geostationary altitude. The spacecraft is drifting in a westward direction at a rate of 3.3 degrees per day from its original longitude at 36 degrees east. At this rate, GEOS-2 completes one revolution relative to the rotating earth in 108 days. Because of an increasing number of satellites in geostationary orbit and a growing collision hazard, the operational experience gained in the planning and execution of the GEOS-2 maneuvers will be valuable for similar maneuvers in the future.
