Russian Soyuz rocket delivers military intelligence-gathering satellite into orbit
February 7, 2021 Stephen Clark

Russia sent a spy satellite into orbit aboard a Soyuz rocket Feb. 2 from a snowy launch pad at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, setting off on a mission to detect, locate, and characterize foreign military radio signals.

The military satellite took off at 2045 GMT (3:45 p.m. EST; 11:45 p.m. Moscow time) Feb. 2 on a Soyuz-2.1b rocket, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The defense ministry did not identify the type of satellite on the rocket, but the launch trajectory and the orbit of the payload indicated it is the next in a series of Russian military Lotos S1 intelligence-gathering spacecraft.

The Russian military said the Soyuz-2.1b rocket launched from Pad 4 at Site 43 at Plesetsk, located in far northern Russia about 500 miles (800 kilometers) north of Moscow.

After heading northeast from Plesetsk, the Soyuz shed its four liquid-fueled first stage boosters, second stage, and payload fairing. The Soyuz third stage injected the Russian military’s fourth Lotos S1 surveillance satellite into an orbit ranging in altitude between 152 miles (245 kilometers) and 559 miles (900 kilometers), with an inclination of 67.1 degrees to the equator.

The orbit matches the altitude and inclination of the previous Lotos satellites. Russia launched first Lotos test satellite in November 2009, then deployed a series of operational Lotos electronic intelligence-gathering spacecraft — known as Lotos S1 satellites — with launches in 2014, 2017, and 2018.

The satellite is officially named Kosmos 2549, keeping with the Russian military’s spacecraft naming scheme.

The new Lotos S1 spacecraft is expected to maneuver the satellite into a circular 560-mile-high (900-kilometer) orbit before it enters service for the Russian military to eavesdrop on radio communications.

The Lotos S1 satellites are built by KB Arsenal, a Russian military contractor in Saint Petersburg, in partnership with TsSKB Progress. According to the manufacturer, the Lotos S1 satellites weigh around 13,000 pounds (6,000 kilograms) fully fueled at launch.

The Feb. 2 mission was the first Russian space launch of the year.

China launches military satellite toward geostationary orbit
February 7, 2021 Stephen Clark

A mysterious Chinese government satellite, believed to be a military-operated early warning station, successfully launched into orbit Feb. 4 on top of a Long March 3B rocket.

The three-stage, 184-foot-tall (55-meter) rocket lifted off from the Xichang space center at 1536 GMT (10:36 a.m. EST), according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., or CASC, China’s biggest state-owned aerospace contractor.

The Long March 3B pitched away from Xichang, located in Sichuan province in southwestern China, on an easterly trajectory to head for an elliptical geostationary transfer orbit.

Liftoff occurred at 11:36 p.m. Beijing time.

After dropping its four hydrazine-fueled boosters, first stage, and second stage, the Long March 3B’s twin-engine cryogenic upper stage ignited two times to inject the rocket’s payload into the proper orbit for deployment. Chinese government officials said the mission achieved its “predetermined orbit” and was a “complete success.”

U.S. military tracking data indicated the payload separated from the Long March 3B rocket in an elliptical, or egg-shaped, orbit ranging between 120 miles (194 kilometers) and 22,251 miles (35,811 kilometers) in altitude, with an inclination of 28.5 degrees to the equator.

The spacecraft is expected to use an on-board propulsion system to reach a circular orbit more than 22,000 miles over the equator, where its orbital velocity will match Earth’s rotation, giving the satellite a fixed coverage area.

According to CASC, the new spacecraft — named TJS 6 — is a communication technology test satellite. The TJS 6 spacecraft will be “mainly used for satellite communications, radio and television, data transmission, and other services,” CASC said, along with conducting related technology verification tests.

But independent analysts believe the TJS 6 satellite has a military purpose, and could carry sensors designed to warn Chinese leaders of an impending missile attack. Low-resolution illustrations of the TJS 6 satellite show payloads that are similar to infrared instruments on-board U.S. military early warning satellites.

China has launched six satellites in the TJS series since 2015, and all are widely speculated to have military missions. The TJS 2, TJS 5, and TJS 6 satellites appear to be of the same type, likely with missile warning sensors.

The TJS 1 and TJS 4 satellites are theorized to have an electronic or signals intelligence-gathering mission.

Progress MS-16 cumuje w trybie manualnym do ISS
BY KRZYSZTOF KANAWKA ON 21 LUTEGO 2021

(...) Dwa dni później, 17 lutego, Progress MS-16 dotarł do ISS. Cumowanie w trybie manualnym nastąpiło o godzinie 07:26 CET.

Russia launches cargo ship heading for International Space Station
February 15, 2021 Stephen Clark

Russia launched an unpiloted Progress cargo freighter Sunday from Kazakhstan, on course to deliver 2.7 tons of food, fuel, water, and supplies to the International Space Station before hauling away a no-longer-needed section of the outpost later this year to clear the way for a new laboratory module.

The Progress MS-16 cargo ship blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz-2.1a rocket at 11:45:06 p.m. EST Sunday (0445:06 GMT; 9:45:06 a.m. local time).

The kerosene-fueled launcher quickly disappeared into a soupy layer of clouds, but live video from on-board “rocket cams” showed the Soyuz climbing through the atmosphere before shedding four first stage boosters and an aerodynamic shroud that covered the Progress spacecraft during the first few minutes of flight.

The Soyuz later jettisoned its core stage and ignited a third stage engine to finish the job of placing the Progress MS-16 supply ship into a preliminary orbit.

The automated cargo carrier separated from the Soyuz third stage and unfurled solar panels and navigation antennas, beginning a two-day pursuit of the space station that will culminate in a docking with the space station’s Pirs module at 1:20 a.m. EST (0620 GMT) Wednesday.

The Progress MS-16 spacecraft is loaded with around 5,424 pounds, or 2,460 kilograms, of cargo and supplies for the space station and its seven-person crew, according to Roscosmos, the Russian space agency.

The freighter’s payload includes about 3,086 pounds (1,400 kilograms) of dry cargo packed inside the Progress spacecraft’s pressurized compartment. There’s also 1,322 pounds (600 kilograms) of propellant to be fed into the space station’s Zvezda service module propulsion system, along with 926 pounds (420 kilograms) of fresh water and 89 pounds (40.5 kilograms) of pressurized gases to supplement the space station’s breathable atmosphere.

The Soyuz rocket’s liftoff Sunday marked the 77th launch of a Progress supply ship to the International Space Station since 2000. The previous Progress cargo ship, Progress MS-15, undocked from the space station Feb. 9 and made a destructive re-entry into the atmosphere, getting rid of trash and clearing the way for the arrival of fresh cargo delivery.

The Progress MS-16 spacecraft is also carrying equipment to help cosmonauts detect and patch leaks on the space station, plus Russian biomedical experiments and a research payload to study obtaining food and oxygen from algae in microgravity, Roscosmos said.

The supply ship will remain at the space station until July, when the Progress is scheduled to depart with the Pirs docking compartment in tow. The Progress MS-16 will guide itself, along with the disused Pirs module, back into the atmosphere to burn up at the end of its mission.

The Pirs module has served as a docking port and an airlock for cosmonauts on spacewalks since 2001. A similar module named Poisk serves a similar function, and will remain at the space station.

The removal of the Pirs module clears a docking port on the Zvezda service module, the central hub of the space station’s Russian segment, for the arrival of the long-delayed Nauka laboratory later this year after launch on a heavy-lift Proton rocket. The Nauka lab module will be the largest addition to the Russian segment of the station since 2000, when Zvezda itself was launched.

Russian Progress Cargo Craft Docks to Station
Mark Garcia Posted on February 17, 2021

Progress 77 is scheduled to remain docked to the space station’s Russian segment until later this year. Instead of undocking from Pirs, this time Progress will stay connected and detach Pirs from the Earth-facing side of the station’s Russian segment, where it has spent nearly 20 years in service as both a docking port and spacewalk airlock.

Progress then will fire its engines to initiate a destructive entry into Earth’s atmosphere for both the spacecraft and docking compartment. Pirs’ departure from the space station is scheduled to take place just days after the launch of the “Nauka” Multipurpose Laboratory Module on a Proton rocket from Baikonur. The multifunctional docking port and research facility will automatically dock to the port vacated by Pirs.

HELSINKI — A Long March 4C rocket sent a latest series of three Yaogan-31 reconnaissance satellites into orbit late Tuesday.

The Long March 4C lifted off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert at 9:22 p.m. Eastern Feb. 23, marking a return to launch activities following the Chinese New Year.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. (CASC) announced launch success within two hours of liftoff.

The satellites are the third group of Yaogan-31 triplets. The previous two groups, launched in April 2018 and January 2021, were placed into orbits of around 1,100 by 1,050 kilometers inclined by 63.4 degrees.

Chinese media state that the satellites will be used for “electromagnetic environment surveys and other related technology tests.”

Western defense analysis suggests that Yaogan (“remote sensing”) satellites are military reconnaissance satellites and part of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems for the People’s Liberation Army.

Yaogan satellites are believed to be equipped variously with optical, synthetic aperture radar and electronic intelligence payloads.

Yaogan satellites are The Yaogan-31 satellites and their orbits may be seen as analogous to U.S. Department of Defense Naval Ocean Surveillance System (NOSS) satellite triplets.

Such satellites locate and track vessels by detecting and triangulating radio transmissions.

The Long March 4C was provided by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST), while the satellites were developed by Dongfanghong Satellite Co., Ltd., belonging to the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST).

SAST and CAST are major subsidiaries of CASC, a giant defense state-owned enterprise and China’s main space contractor.

The launch was China’s fifth of 2021. CASC is planning at least 40 launches this year and is currently preparing launches of a new Long March 7A from Wenchang following failure of the rocket’s test launch last year. The Long March 5B to launch China’s first space station module is also undergoing assembly at the coastal Wenchang launch center. (...)

Another trio of Chinese military satellites successfully deployed
February 27, 2021 Stephen Clark

Weeks after the launch of an earlier trio of Chinese military satellites, another spacecraft triplet successfully took off Feb. 24 aboard a Long March 4C rocket on a clandestine mission that analysts believe may involve spying on foreign naval forces.

The Yaogan 31 triplet launched at 0222 GMT on Feb. 24 (9:22 p.m. EST on Feb. 23) from the Jiuquan space base on the Gobi Desert of northwestern China. Liftoff occurred at 10:22 a.m. Beijing time.

Chinese officials declared the launch a success, and U.S. military tracking data indicated the three-stage, liquid-fueled Long March 4C rocket delivered the Yaogan 31 satellites to an orbit 680 miles (1,100 kilometers) in altitude, with an inclination of 63.4 degrees to the equator.

China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported the Yaogan 31 satellites “will be used for electromagnetic environment surveys and other related technology tests.”

The Yaogan name is used for Chinese military satellites. Yaogan satellites carry high-resolution optical, radar, and signals intelligence instruments, collecting information for analysis by Chinese military and intelligence agencies.

The satellite triplet launched Feb. 24 is the third trio of Yaogan 31-type satellites China has launched, following Long March 4C flights in April 2018 and on Jan. 29. Independent analysts believe the Yaogan 31 satellites have a maritime reconnaissance mission helping Chinese military authorities track foreign naval movements.

Before 2018, China launched five Long March 4C missions with Yaogan triplets into the same 680-mile-high orbit used by the Yaogan 31 series. Those flights may have deployed earlier generations of maritime surveillance satellites.

The launch of three more Yaogan 31 satellites Feb. 24 marked China’s fifth orbital launch attempt of 2021. Four of those missions were successful.

China plans more than 40 space launches this year, including a Long March 5B rocket flight to loft the core module of a Chinese space station, followed by cargo and crew missions to the nascent orbital complex.

HELSINKI — India launched its first mission of the year late Saturday, sending Brazil’s Amazonia-1 Earth observation satellite and 18 smaller payloads into orbit.

The 44-meter-high PSLV-C51 rocket with two solid side boosters lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center on the Indian island of Sriharikota at 11:54 p.m. Eastern Feb. 28.

The  PSLV injected the roughly 700-kilogram Amazonia-1 into its intended Sun-synchronous orbit 17 minutes after launch. The further 18 passengers were released over the subsequent 98 minutes in accordance with a predetermined sequence.

The mission was hailed as the first dedicated commercial mission of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), a Government of India company under the Department of Space.

Optical Earth observation satellite Amazonia-1 belongs to Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K Sivan stated shortly after launch the satellite was in good health.

This satellite is designed to deliver remote sensing data to the government and science community for monitoring deforestation in the Amazon region and analysis of diversified agriculture across the Brazilian territory.

It carries a wide-view optical imager (camera with 3 frequency bands in the visible spectrum – VIS – and 1 band near the infrared – Near Infrared) capable of observing a 850 km range with 64 meters of resolution.

Amazonia-1 is the first Earth observation satellite completely designed, integrated, tested and operated by Brazil. INPE plans to launch two further satellites in the series. INPE of Brazil contracted Spaceflight Inc. to secure the launch.

Its relatively low mass allowed margin for a number of other payloads. Of these 14 were aboard through NSIL, including 12 SpaceBEE 1U-CubeSats for U.S.-based Swarm Technologies, Inc. for two-satellite communications and data relay, and SAI-1 NanoConnect-2, developed by the Space Instrumentation Laboratory of the National University of Mexico. SindhuNetra, an AIS technology demonstrator, was funded by the Defense Research and Development Organization of India.

The four further payloads were for INSPACe, India’s new regulatory and space promotion organization. These were three UNITYsat satellites developed by the Jeppiaar Institute of Technology, G. H. Raisoni College of Engineering, and the Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology. The final payload is the 3U-CubeSat Satish Dhawan Sat (SDSAT) from Space Kidz India to study radiation and the magnetosphere.

ISRO stated that the total number of customer satellites from foreign countries placed in orbit by PSLV is 342 satellites from 34 countries following the PSLV-C51 launch.

The launch is India’s first of a 2021, following a 2020 severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Satish Dhawan Space Center carried out its first 2020 mission only in November with the launch of the EOS-1 Earth observation satellite and nine smaller payloads. (...)

Indian rocket launches Brazilian satellite to track Amazon deforestation
February 28, 2021 Stephen Clark

(...) Amazonia 1 is the first Earth observation satellite completely designed, integrated, tested, and operated by Brazil, according to INPE, a division of Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Communications. The PSLV aimed to deliver the Amazonia 1 satellite to a 467-mile-high (752-kilometer) sun-synchronous orbit with an inclination of about 98.5 degrees

In that type of orbit, Amazonia 1 will fly over different parts of the world at roughly the same time of day, allowing its imager to observe the environment under similar lighting conditions throughout the satellite’s four-year mission.

ISRO officials confirmed the rocket separated the Brazilian spacecraft into the correct orbit. Officials in the launch control center said Amazonia 1 extended its power-generating solar panels, and ground teams established contact with the new satellite after it arrived in space.

“In this mission, India and ISRO feel extremely proud and honored and happy to launch the first satellite designed, integrated, and operated by Brazil,” said K. Sivan, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization. “My heartiest congratulations to the Brazilian team for this achievement. The satellite is in very good health, and solar panels are deployed, and it’s functioning very nicely. Let me congratulate and compliment the entire Brazilian team.”

Marcos Pontes, Brazil’s minister of science, technology, innovation, and communications, observed the launch from the Indian space center. In remarks after the launch, Pontes said it was a “very, very happy day.”

“We’ve been working on this satellite for many years, and this moment represents a very important (milestone),” Pontes said. (...)

“The deployment of Amazonia 1 will allow us to capture images and monitor the environment and agriculture throughout the Brazilian territory which will help us better understand the expansive terrestrial environment in the region,” said Adenilson Silva, an INPE engineer managing the Amazonia mission.

The Amazonia 1 satellite is the most advanced spacecraft ever built in Brazil, using the homemade Multi-Mission Platform, or MMP, bus. Although the platform uses parts acquired abroad, the program allows Brazil to gain experience in spacecraft manufacturing, testing, integration, propulsion, and deployment mechanisms, according to INPE.

“In addition to the technological achievements of the mission, it also represents the last step of MMP development,” Silva said in a statement.

The Amazonia 1 satellite carries a wide-angle optical imager with a resolution of 210 feet (64 meters). The imaging instrument will take pictures of an area spanning up to 528 miles (850 kilometers) wide, allowing the satellite to observe a wide swath of the planet on each orbit.

The satellite’s wide viewing area will allow it to revisit the same part of the world every five days, officials said. Amazonia 1 will also monitor agriculture in Brazil and other regions around the planet, INPE said.

Amazonia 1 will work in tandem with the CBERS 4 and CBERS 4A satellites developed in partnership between China and Brazil. On those missions, China built and launched the satellites, while Brazil provided instrument hardware.

The 18 smaller payloads that rode the PSLV into orbit include 12 tiny SpaceBEE satellites from Swarm Technologies. The small data relay nodes each weigh less than 2 pounds (1 kilogram). The “BEE” in SpaceBEE stands for Basic Electronic Element.

Swarm, headquartered in Silicon Valley, is developing a low-data-rate satellite communications fleet the company says could be used by connected cars, remote environmental sensors, industrial farming operations, transportation, smart meters, and for text messaging in rural areas outside the range of terrestrial networks.

Each of the SpaceBEEs is about the size of a slice of bread. The launch of 12 new satellites came a month after SpaceX launched 36 SpaceBEEs for Swarm on a rideshare mission that lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

There was a CubeSat named NanoConnect 2 developed by Mexican students at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, or UNAM, in Mexico City on the PSLV mission. NanoConnect 2 will test power, computer, communications, and mechanical satellite systems in the space environment. The PSLV also carried five Indian nanosatellites from academic institutions and the Indian military. (...)

- Базовый модуль служебных систем «Навигатор» — основной структурный элемент, обеспечивает функционирование спутника на всех этапах его автономного полета. Он разработан с возможностью адаптации под различные полезные нагрузки и рабочие орбиты;

- Контроля и прогноза вспышечной активности Солнца;

- контроля и прогноза радиационной обстановки в ОКП и состояния геомагнитного поля;

Russian satellite for polar weather forecasting ready for launch Sunday
February 27, 2021 Stephen Clark

A Soyuz-2.1b rocket stands on the launch pad at Site 31 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Credit: Roscosmos

(...) The Fregat upper stage with Arktika-M 1 will separate from the Soyuz third stage at T+plus 9 minutes, 23 seconds, followed soon by the first burn by the Fregat’s main engine to reach a preliminary parking orbit. Two more Fregat engine firings will boost the Arktika-M 1 spacecraft into a highly elliptical, or oval-shaped, orbit ranging between about 600 miles and 25,000 miles (1,050 and 39,700 kilometers).

The 4,850-pound (2,200-kilogram) Arktika-M 1 satellite will deploy from the Fregat space tug around two hours into the mission. In its elongated path around Earth — also called a Molniya-type orbit — the spacecraft will take about 12 hours to complete one lap around the planet.

The target orbit has an inclination of about 63.4 degrees, meaning Arktika-M 1 will linger above the northern hemisphere when it farthest from Earth, providing its instruments a view of Arctic weather patterns for multiple hours on each orbit. With two satellites in orbits positioned 180 degrees apart, the Arktika network could provide around-the-clock coverage over the Arctic.

Arktika-M 1 is the first of a new line of satellites designed to provide persistent weather data on Russia’s Arctic, home to economically lucrative natural resources, energy reserves, and an important region for Russian military operations. The Arktika-M satellites are built by NPO Lavochkin, the same Russian company that builds Fregat upper stages.

Russia’s first Arktika M satellite. Credit: Roscosmos

The Arktika-M 1 satellite is based on the design of Russia’s Elektro-L weather satellites that fly in geostationary orbit over the equator. Weather observatories in geostationary orbit collect imagery 24 hours a day over the same part of the Earth, but they are unable to peer at weather systems over high latitude regions.

According to Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency, the Arktika-M satellites will obtain color images of clouds and Earth’s surface in the Arctic. The Arktika-M satellites also host radio receivers and transmitters to relay information from weather stations and search-and-rescue beacons in polar regions, which are inaccessible to conventional geostationary satellites.

In addition to weather observations and emergency communications support, the Arktika-M satellites will help forecast solar flare activity, measure radiation through the Van Allen belts, and collect data on Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere, Roscosmos said.

Roscosmos said engineers modified the spacecraft design used for Russia’s Elektro-L weather satellites to make it suitable for the Arktika program. The changes include additional radiation hardening and solar batteries to meet the challenges of the elliptical Molniya orbit.
