Przy okazji startu zrobiono kilka bardzo udanych fotek. Najbardziej podoba mi się ta:

My remote cameras survived! The covering was a bit melted but the lens and body are perfect. Thank you for the this incredible launch @NASA, @torybruno, & @ulalaunch!

Czy podczas przelotu obok Wenus sonda wykona zdjęcia planety?

Despite the fact that Parker will by Venus seven times during the mission, I’m told there are no plans to image the planet. Parker’s main imaging instrument, WISPR, is optimized to image the corona, inner heliosphere, and solar wind.

4.1.3 Calibration

We plan a limited set of observations for instrument checkout and calibration following instrument turn-on on the approach to each solar encounter. A few images per day will be taken for up to ten days while the spacecraft distance from the Sun is less than 0.5 AU on the inbound segment of each orbit. Some of these images may involve small off-points of the spacecraft from the Sun (up to a few arc minutes) to verify the stray light performance of the instrument. These data would need to be downlinked prior to the solar encounter period to be useful for planning purposes.

NASA Is About to Launch the Fastest Spacecraft in History. Target: The Sun!
By Meghan Bartels, Space.com Senior Writer | August 10, 2018

(...) That's when the probe will reach its closest point to the sun, coming within 3.83 million miles (6 million kilometers) of our star. At that point, the spacecraft will be speeding along at a whopping 430,000 mph (692,000 km/h). (...)

During its closest approach to the sun, the Parker Solar Probe will leave other speedy spacecraft eating metaphorical dust. For comparison, the Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched back in 1977, is currently traveling at about 38,000 mph (61,000 km/h), according to NASA — less than 10 percent of the Parker Solar Probe's peak speed. 195 km/s

Parker Solar Probe will perform its first close approach to the sun in November, coming within about 24.8 million kilometers. Future flybys will bring it even closer, eventually coming as close as 6.1 million kilometers, far closer than any previous spacecraft. During those later close approaches, the spacecraft will be traveling at up to 695,000 kilometers per hour.

Delta-IV Heavy Lofts NASA's Parker Solar Probe on Landmark Mission to the Sun
By Mike Killian, on August 12th, 2018

(...) It will check in 3 times a week while sweeping through the corona, and will downlink data back to Earth once it’s safely through, via NASA’s Deep Space Network (maximum downlink rate from the spacecraft is 555 kilobits per second (kbps)).

Health and status telemetry will be sent to Earth three times per week during cruise phases of the mission. During the solar encounter phase, PSP will talk to Earth three times per week by transmitting a beacon tone to indicate its health and status.

During the science data downlink period, PSP will transmit high rate science data to the ground on a daily basis, from 10 to 24 hours per day

“Exploring the Sun’s corona with a spacecraft has been one of the hardest challenges for space exploration,” said Nicola Fox, project scientist at APL. “We’re finally going to be able to answer questions about the corona and solar wind raised by Gene Parker in 1958 – using a spacecraft that bears his name – and I can’t wait to find out what discoveries we make. The science will be remarkable.”

Dr Parker was actually at the launch too, the only living person to ever have a NASA spacecraft and mission named after him.

And it was his first rocket launch, too.

A plaque dedicating the mission to Parker was attached to the spacecraft in May, which includes a quote from the renowned physicist – “Let’s see what lies ahead.” It also holds more than 1.1 million names submitted by the public to travel with the spacecraft to the Sun.

Fun fact about the Parker Solar Probe. When the mission is over and it’s out of fuel, it will no longer be able to point its shield towards the sun, burning up 90% of the spacecraft. The heat shield will then orbit the sun for millions of years.
