After landing probes on the lunar and Martian surfaces, China has begun to set its sights on the core of our solar system.

In a landmark step, the country launched its first solar observation satellite on Thursday, aiming to help scientists deepen their knowledge about the star.

The 508-kilogram satellite, the Chinese H-Alpha Solar Explorer, was launched by a Long March 2D carrier rocket that blasted off at 6:51 pm at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi province and entered a sun-synchronous orbit about 517 kilometers above Earth, according to a statement from the China National Space Administration. China launches orbiting solar observatory
October 18, 2021 Stephen Clark

(...) The rocket employed a grid fin control system on its first stage, the first time such a steering mechanism has been used on a Long March 2D launcher. The grid fins extended from the first stage after the booster jettisoned a few minutes after launch.

The system is designed to reduce the size of the booster’s impact area by more than 80%, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., the leading state-owned contractor for China’s space program. (...)

China deployed a satellite on Sunday morning to carry out technological tests for space debris management, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, the country’s major space contractor.

The State-owned conglomerate said in a news release that the Shijian 21 was lifted by a Long March 3B carrier rocket at 9:27 am at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern China’s Sichuan province and later entered its preset orbit. The launch marked the 393rd flight of the Long March rocket family.

The spacecraft is tasked with demonstrating technologies to alleviate and neutralize space debris, the company said, without giving more details.

Space debris are defunct artificial objects in space, including everything from spent rocket stages and old satellites to fragments from disintegration, erosion and collisions. Some of that debris may collide with operational spacecraft or cause hazards to manned spaceflights.

A 1 cm object moving at 17,000 kilometer per hour would deliver as much energy as a hand grenade and could destroy a spacecraft, according to experts.

China started a space debris action plan in 2000 and has allocated considerable amount of resources to research the detection, prevention and mitigation of space debris, space officials have said.

The China National Space Administration established its Space Debris Monitoring and Application Center in June 2015. The center is responsible for tracking waste, analyzing hazards, developing prevention and disposal plans, setting up a database and communicating with other nations and international organizations.

There are more than 100 million pieces of debris that are smaller than 1 cm in the space and weighing thousands of metric tons. Impacts by these particles can cause erosive damage and can disable spacecraft, the administration said.

About half of debris in outer space were created by disintegrated spacecraft, said Liu Jing, a senior researcher at the National Astronomical Observatories and deputy director of the Space Debris Monitoring and Application Center. She added that abandoned mission payloads and used rocket parts are also major sources of such junks.

HELSINKI — China launched the Shijian-21 satellite from Xichang late Saturday with the stated aim of testing space debris mitigation technologies.

A Long March 3B lifted off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, southwest China, at 9:27 p.m. Eastern, Oct. 23, sending Shijian-21 into geosynchronous transfer orbit.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. (CASC) confirmed launch success within an hour of launch. Chinese state media Xinhua reported that Shijian-21 will “ test and verify space debris mitigation technologies.”

No details of the satellite or its capabilities were made available. Coupled with the fact that space debris mitigation technologies are “dual-use,” having both civilian and military applications, the satellite is likely to attract interest and scrutiny outside China. (...)

(...) U.S. military tracking data indicated the launcher placed the Shijian 21 spacecraft into an elliptical geostationary transfer orbit ranging as high as 22,253 miles (35,813 kilometers) above Earth, with an inclination of about 28.5 degrees to the equator.

The orbit suggests Shijian 21 will use its own propulsion to circularize its orbit more than 22,000 miles over the equator. At that altitude, in a geostationary orbit, the spacecraft will move around Earth once every 24 hours, traveling at the same rate of the planet’s rotation.

In a statement, the China Aerospace and Science Technology Corp. confirmed the launch was a success. CASC said the Shijian 21 satellite was built by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, part of the government-owned space industry. (...)

TAMPA, Fla. — Arianespace has successfully launched the heaviest satellite SES has ever ordered, marking a cornerstone for a multi-orbit network that is seeing surging demand from commercial aviation customers.

Weighing roughly 6,400 kilograms, the all-electric SES-17 satellite lifted off from French Guiana Oct. 23 at 10:10 a.m. Eastern on an Ariane 5 rocket, which also carried the Syracuse 4A communications satellite for France’s military.

Their combined mass totaled 10,264 kilograms at separation in the heaviest mission Arianespace has ever conducted. The Ariane 5 was also the tallest Arianespace has ever launched at 56.4 meters, resulting from a 1.5-meter fairing extension. (...)

(...) Running a day late after a ground system issue forced a 24-hour delay from Friday, teams pumped cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen into the Ariane 5 launcher’s main stage and upper stage Saturday afternoon on the ELA-3 launch pad at the Guiana Space Center in South America.

The Ariane 5’s countdown stopped five minutes before the rocket’s first launch opportunity Saturday night. After a 67-minute hold to allow engineers to analyze pressure readings in the Ariane 5’s main stage, the countdown resumed and the rocket’s Vulcain 2 main engine flashed to life at 10:10 p.m. EDT (0210 GMT). (...)

(...) Arianespace, the French company that manages Ariane 5 launch operations, declared success on the mission. Designated VA255 in Arianespace’s flight sequence, the launch Saturday night was the 111th flight of an Ariane 5 rocket since 1996, and the 255th mission overall with the Ariane rocket family.

Built Thales Alenia Space, the SES 17 communications satellite will provide internet connectivity to airline passengers over the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Atlantic Ocean for SES of Luxembourg. The fully fueled satellite weighed 14,133 pounds (6,411 kilograms) at launch, according to Arianespace’s launch press kit.

SES 17 is the largest satellite ever procured by SES, and the largest spacecraft ever built by Thales. It carries a new digital payload controller, developed in a public-private partnership with ESA, that is capable of re-programming the satellites’s nearly 200 spot beams, adjusting power and frequency allocations to respond to changing customer needs. (...)

The Syracuse 4A satellite. Credit: DGA

(...) The 8,492-pound (3,852-kilogram) Syracuse 4A spacecraft, also built by Thales Alenia Space, will provide communications services for the French military. The satellite will relay secure communications between French military aircraft, armored ground vehicles, and naval vessels, including submarines.

The Syracuse 4 program replaces the Syracuse 3 generation, which comprises two French satellites launched in 2005 and 2006, and a joint spacecraft with Italy that went into orbit in 2015. The Syracuse satellites provide relay services for French military forces deployed and on the move in areas outside the each of terrestrial communications.

The French defense ministry announced in 2019 that the new generation of Syracuse satellites would have cameras to help identify and monitor possible attackers. The Syracuse 4 satellites are also resistant to jamming, and provide higher data relay rates and improved flexibility over the aging Syracuse 3 satellites. (...)

Japanese H-2A rocket ready for launch with navigation satellite
October 25, 2021 Stephen Clark

(...) The flight was delayed 24 hours because of a poor weather forecast for the mission’s first launch opportunity.

Japanese teams from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the H-2A’s prime contractor and operator, rolled the rocket from its assembly building to the launch pad around 15 hours before liftoff. The 1,600-foot (500-meter) journey on a mobile launch table took about 30 minutes to complete.

Once at the launch pad, the rocket was connected to ground electrical and propellant systems, allowing the H-2A team to start loading liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen into the launcher’s first and second stage tanks.

QZS 1R, built by Mitsubishi Electric Corp., weighs about 4 metric tons (4.4 tons) fully fueled on top of the H-2A rocket. (...)

Designed for a 15-year lifetime, the spacecraft will use its own propulsion system to reach a near-circular geosynchronous orbit with an average altitude of about 22,000 miles. The QZS 1R satellite will settle into an operational orbit tilted between 40 and 45 degrees to the equator, where it will circle the planet once every 24 hours.

The four-satellite QZSS fleet, entirely compatible with the GPS network, is positioned in orbits that loiter over Japan. GPS satellites, operated by the U.S. Space Force, circle Earth in lower orbits, meaning different spacecraft are visible in the sky at different times.

Projected against Earth’s surface, the QZS 1R satellite’s ground track will chart an asymmetric figure-eight pattern stretching from Japan to Australia as it alternates north and south of the equator. Three of the active quasi-zenith satellites are positioned in similar inclined geosynchronous orbits, and another one is parked in geostationary orbit over the equator, remaining in a fixed position over the planet.

Like the satellite it’s replacing, QZS 1R will be near-zenith, or almost straight up, in the Japanese sky for about eight hours each day. With a full complement of satellites, the constellation permits continuous coverage of Japan.

Kuaizhou lifts off successfully, places satellite in orbit
By Zhao Lei | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2021-10-27 15:05

China launched a high-resolution Earth-observation satellite into space aboard a Kuaizhou 1A carrier rocket on Wednesday afternoon, according to the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp.

In a statement, the State-owned space contractor said that the solid-propellant rocket blasted off at 2:19 pm from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China, and placed the satellite — a Jilin-1 Gaofen-02F — into a preset orbit shortly after. The mission marked the 12th flight of the Kuaizhou 1A.

Developed by Changguang Satellite Technology in Northeast China's Jilin province, the Jilin-1 Gaofen-02F is a high-resolution optical remote-sensing satellite.

Kuaizhou is the largest solid-propellant rocket class in China. The country's other main rocket class, the Long March series, mainly relies on liquid fuel.

According to CASIC, the 20-meter tall Kuaizhou 1A has a liftoff weight of about 30 metric tons. It is capable of taking 200 kilograms of payload into a sun-synchronous orbit, or 300 kg of payload into a low-Earth orbit.

Since its maiden flight in January 2017, the rocket has lifted 21 satellites into space.

The successful deployment of a small remote sensing satellite Wednesday set a new record for Chinese orbital launch attempts in a single year at 40 missions, surpassing a mark set in 2018 and 2020. (...)

The satellite on-board the rocket was Jilin 1 Gaofen 02F, a new member of a commercially-focused fleet of remote sensing satellites owned by Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co. Ltd. With Wednesday’s launch, 31 Jilin 1-series spacecraft have successfully flown into orbit since 2015.

Chang Guang plans to launch a fleet of more than 100 small Earth-imaging satellites. The company is a joint venture between the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the government of Jilin province, and three private companies.

The Jilin 1 Gaofen 02F satellite is believed to be capable of collecting imagery with a resolution of better than 2.5 feet (76 centimeters), supporting applications in natural resource and environmental monitoring. (...)
