McKay made another emergency landing on his 25th flight on May 6, 1966, when the X-15-1’s LR-99 engine shut down prematurely. The aircraft did not incur any damage and McKay suffered no injuries.

Later, on 6 May 1966, Jack McKay, flying X-15-1, was forced to make an emergency landing on Delmar Dry Lake caused by a broken propellant turbopump casing. Even though the landing was long and McKay ran a few hundred feet off the lake bed into the desert, the plane was undamaged and McKay took it to the air a month later.

12 May 1960. Joe Walker launched in X-15-1 from NB-52A for the first Mach-3 X-15 flight. For the first time the X-15 was carried away from Edwards AFB for a launch over Silver Lake to allow it to make its speed run in a straight line.

Joe Walker had made the first mach 3 X-15 flight in it on May 12. He reached mach 3.11 (2111 miles per hour) and an altitude of 77,882 feet, breaking Mel Apt's speed record of mach 3.196 (2094 miles per hour), set in the X-2 on September 27, 1956.

After having been launched from a B-50 bomber over the Mojave Desert in California, Capt. Milburn G. Apt (USAF), flying an X-2 rocket-powered plane on its 13th powered flight, set a record speed of 3,377 kph, or Mach 3.196 at 19,977 m. Subsequent loss of control from inertial coupling led to the destruction of the aircraft and the death of the pilot.
