The New York Times ArchivesCAPE KENNEDY, Fla., Tues day, July 27—Three American astronauts, the men of Apollo 15, soared toward the moon today after a spectacular launching that was called the smoothest and most nearly flawless start of any of the na tion's lunar adventures.
The thunderous lift‐off yes terday, at 9:34 A.M., Eastern daylight time, came a mere 187‐thousandths of a second 187 milliseconds—later than scheduled.
“This was the most unevent ful countdown we have had,” Walter J. Kapryan, the launch ing director, said with pride at a news conference after the five days of intense; complex preparations and the tense cli max of lift‐off.
