#OTD in 1846, Neptune's largest moon Triton was discovered. It is the only large moon in our solar system that orbits in the opposite direction of its planet's rotation. Learn more: https://science.nasa.gov/neptune/moons/triton/This photo of Triton was taken by Voyager 2 in 1989.
On this day in 1977, small solar system body Chiron was discovered by Charles Kowal. Chiron is currently classified as both a minor planet and a comet and scientists believe that it could have rings (as shown in this artist rendering). More stats: https://s.si.edu/47jeb9D
Today in 1801, Giuseppe Piazzi discovered dwarf planet Ceres, the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It was visited by the Dawn spacecraft in 2015, the first dwarf planet to receive a visit from a spacecraft.
