Remembering the Dogs of War: 25 Years Since Discovery Closed Out the Shuttle's Military CareerBy Ben Evans, on December 3rd, 2017
(...) ...) Representing such a broad swathe of the U.S. armed services, and having been trained by the so-called “Bad Dog” training team at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas, the STS-53 crew quickly earned the nickname “
Dogs of War”. Each man gained his own dog-name, with sandy-haired Walker dubbed “
Red Dog”, Cabana labeled “
Mighty Dog”, Voss in receipt of “
Dogface”, a tribute to the U.S. Army’s Dogface infantrymen of World War II, whilst “rookie” astronaut Clifford drew “
Puppy Dog”. For Bluford, who was in Europe on a NASA public affairs visit when Walker gave out the dog-names, the unfortunate moniker of “
Dog-Gone” stuck.
