Ariane 5 launches two satellites on first mission in nearly a year
by Jeff Foust — July 30, 2021

ORLANDO — An Ariane 5 successfully launched two commercial communications satellites July 30 in the first flight of the rocket in nearly a year, and the first of two missions before it launches a NASA space telescope. (...)

Star One D2 is a Maxar-built satellite for Brazilian operator Embratel Star One. The 6,190-kilogram satellite carries a payload of C-, Ka-, Ku- and X-band transponders that will serve a variety of applications, from broadband service in Central and South American to government communications over the Atlantic. The spacecraft will operate from 70 degrees west in GEO.

Eutelsat Quantum was built by Airbus Defence and Space for Eutelsat through a public-private partnership with the European Space Agency. The 3,461-kilogram satellite, based on a platform developed by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd., is the first commercial satellite with a “fully flexible” software-defined payload, allowing its spot beams to be reconfigured to meet changing markets. Eutelsat will initially operate the satellite at 48 degrees east in GEO to provide Ku-band service in the Middle East and North Africa. (...)

Ariane 5 rocket launches two geostationary communications satellites

(...) The Ariane 5 is one of the most powerful rockets in the world. Friday’s mission marked the 110th flight of an Ariane 5 rocket since 1996, but it was the first Ariane 5 launch since last August, an unusually long gap between missions to allow engineers to resolve the fairing vibration concern before the launch of JWST.

Technicians at a Northrop Grumman facility in Southern California are readying the observatory — the largest space telescope ever flown — for shipment by boat to the Guiana Space Center.

But first, the Ariane 5 team had to successfully launch two commercial communications satellites Friday.

Thomas Zurbuchen, head of NASA’s science mission directorate, attended the launch Friday in French Guiana. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in an interview Thursday that the agency sent Zurbuchen to the Guiana Space Center to check on preparations for the JWST launch.

“We sent Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen down to French Guiana because it seems the only hold up that we would see with James Webb would be whether or not these two Arianes that fly before JWST, if they get off safely and on time,” Nelson said. “And we wanted Dr. Z t to go down there and check all of that out, so he’ll report to us on what he sees.”(...)

So, Chinese private firm iSpace launched a Hyperbola-1 solid rocket today ~07:50 UTC. Amateur footage posted on Chinese social media was swiftly deleted. We've had no official update since. Looks like a failure, but no confirmation. This would be iSpace's 2nd failure in 6 months

JIUQUAN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The flight test of the third Hyperbola-1 commercial carrier rocket was unsuccessful.

Abnormal performance was identified during the flight of the rocket, which lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 3:39 p.m. (Beijing Time) on Tuesday.

The satellite, carried by the rocket, did not enter orbit as scheduled. Enditem

Mystery surrounds Chinese private rocket launch attempt
by Andrew Jones — August 3, 2021 Updated 1:53 p.m. following confirmation of launch failure.

HELSINKI — Chinese private firm iSpace conducted a launch of a Hyperbola-1 solid rocket early Tuesday but status of the mission remained unclear for hours after liftoff.

The Hyperbola-1 four-stage solid rocket lifted off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert at around 3:50 a.m. Eastern (15:50 local time) August 3.

The launch was tacitly revealed ahead of time via airspace closure notices. The first signs of an issue with the launch came with the early deletion of amateur footage from Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo.

A successful launch to a sun-synchronous orbit would normally be reported within an hour of launch. Neither the firm nor Chinese state media had issued a report on the situation by 8:00 a.m. Eastern. Chinese state media later confirmed that the satellite “did not enter orbit as scheduled.” (...)

Chinese commercial launcher fails during climb to orbit
August 3, 2021 Stephen Clark

File photo of a Hyperbola 1 rocket undergoing launch preparations. Credit: i-Space

(...) The Hyperbola 1 rocket was developed by iSpace, also known as Beijing Interstellar Glory Space Technology Ltd. On its website, iSpace says the Hyperbola 1 rocket consists of four solid-fueled stages, which are supplemented by liquid-fueled attitude control engines.

A data sheet posted on iSpace’s website indicates the Hyperbola 1 rocket stands about 78 feet (24 meters) tall, and produces about 173,000 pounds of liftoff thrust. It can deliver a payload of up to 660 pounds, or 300 kilograms, to a 310-mile-high (500-kilometer) sun-synchronous orbit, according to iSpace.

The first launch of a Hyperbola 1 rocket succeeded in July 2019, making iSpace the first privately-managed firm in China to deliver a satellite into orbit. (...)

A5/OFT-2: Boeing will continue Starliner troubleshooting in ULA's Vertical Integration Facility over the weekend, the company says; for those of you scoring at home, the next available launch dates, based on rendezvous requirements alone, are believed to be 8/15, 16, 19 and 20

If it doesn't launch by 20 I doubt it will launch till November. Because then you're running up against SpaceX CRS-23 and SpaceX Crew-3 docking port requirements... if you ask me the ISS could do with an additional IDSS compatible port on the USOS.

Considering the need for CBM berthing ports is reduced as only Cygnus uses it now. (IIRC HTV-X will also use CBM but the likelihood of a Cygnus and HTV-X being docked at the same time is remote) I Personally think NASA should give serious thought to additional IDSS Ports

Is the 20th the last day for availability based on rendezvous requirements before CRS-23 (if CRS-23 were to stick with launch on the 28th)

(...) Chinese officials declared the launch a success, marking the 27th orbital launch attempt by a Chinese rocket this year. Two of China’s orbital launch attempts this year have failed.

The two satellites aboard the Long March 6 launch were developed by the Shanghai Institute of Microsatellite Innovation, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp.

The mission was the second launch with test satellites for a new global multimedia network, the Chinese Academy of Sciences said, without identifying the name of the network.

The orbital inclination, spacecraft manufacturer, and the description of the satellites match a pair of “KL-Alpha” payloads launched in 2019 for KLEO Connect, a Munich-based company which seeks to develop a fleet of 300 small satellites to provide industrial asset tracking and data relay services.

The two technology demonstration satellites launched Wednesday are believed to be the next pair of “KL-Beta” test spacecraft. (...)

Keeping up busy launch schedule, China launches military telecom satellite
August 5, 2021 Stephen Clark

(...) In a statement, CASC said Zhongxing 2E “is a communications and broadcasting satellite.”

Zhongxing 2E is likely based on the DFH-4 satellite design produced by the China Academy of Space Technology, another government-owned contractor in the Chinese space program.

Analysts believe previous satellites in the Zhongxing 2 series, including a spacecraft on a previous launch in 2019, are designed to provide mobile communications services to the Chinese military. Zhongxing 2E likely has a similar mission. (...)
